Navy gift history in Hastings, Minnesota dates back to the early days of the navy. In 1898, when the United States acquired Guam from Spain, they established a military base on the island. This base was called Naval Station Guam and it served as a primary naval supply depot for the Northern Marianas. In 1902, Commodore John W. Floyd became Commandant of Naval Station Guam and he directed that gifts be given to Admiral George Dewey during his visit to the island. The following year, Commodore Floyd also instituted a blue-ribbon committee to study gift preferences for Marines stationed on Guam. This committee recommended that gifts be given in honor of Marines who had died in battle or who had received awards such as the Congressional Gold Medal. As a result, Commodore Floyd ordered that all Marine Corps personnel receive diplomas or other special recognition upon their return home from service on Guam. In 1907, Commodore Floyd changed Naval Station Guam's name to Harbor Island Naval Base and he directed that gifts be given to Mayor Jens Lohman and other officials of Hastings during his visit. The next year saw an even more significant change when Commodore Floyd moved Navy Headquarters from San Diego to Honolulu so that sailors could better serve their country at sea. Harbor Island Naval Base become Navy Headquarters Annex and Gifts were once again given in honor of local officials along with munitions and equipment donations from ships docked at Honolulu harbor. It wasn't until 1923 that Harbor Island Naval Base was closed down due to budget problems and its use was reserved for Defense Department purposes only. However, because it served as an important logistical hub for our forces abroad during World War II, it still remains one of Hastings' most prominent landmarks today!
