The Hastings National Guard was established on October 1, 1908. The unit was first organized as the Hastings Volunteer Infantry Reserve Corps and served in World War I. In 1920, the National Guard was re-activated and became the Hastings National Guardsmen. The unit served in World War II and the Korean War. The present-day National Guard is one of the oldest units in Minnesota.
Hastings, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named for General George Hastings who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Minnesota. The first settler in Hastings was John McLaren who arrived in 1854. The National Guard may have originated in early America as an emergency militia force composed of rapidly mobilized men volunteers who had no legal right to keep and bear arms but were trained and drilled for military purposes. Militia officers, often former militiamen themselves, were given authority by the Second Amendment of the US Constitution to maintain order and protect national security. The first organized unit called the National Guardsmen were raised by Massachusetts General James Otis on December 15, 1790. Otis' regiment numbered only 509 men when he disbanded it two years later due to financial difficulties. In 1802 New York Governor John Tryon ordered all state militias raised under his command into three companies together with cavalry troops from Virginia under Brigadier General Samuel Troup for service against Native Americans living on Long Island. Meanwhile, President George Washington referred to a standing army of "Nations Guards" that would be lifelong citizen soldiers organized along military lines instead of social welfare lines as needed "to suppress insurrections." This idea was picked up by James K. Polk when he became president in 1849-1850 and eventually put into effect during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The first units formed within the National Guard Service were Companies A & B of Artillery at Fort Monroe on November 25, 1861; Company C of Cavalry at Harpers Ferry on January 16th 1865; Battery A 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment at Petersburg on April 9th 1865; Company D 2nd Maryland Infantry Regiment at Appomattox Court House on April 14th 1865). Officers commanding individual regiments answered directly to presidential executiveorders rather than state legislatures so they could carry out their own strategy without ministerial guidance or supervision from higher ranking officers either within their regiment or between different regiments actingtogether as brigades/divisions/armies. Each brigade became an independent brigade commander with its own commanders (and sometimes support staff) during the Civil War providing operational planning&direction including artillery fire support while maneuvering through battlefields using combined arms maneuvers such as Raids & Missions which evolved into modern Combined Arms Operations
