Military gift history in Hastings, Minnesota began with the first soldier arrive to the area in 1881. The Hastings Volunteer Fire Department was founded that year and Frank L. Hardesty became its first president. Hardesty donated land to the department for a firefighting station and a flagpole. In 1907, the Hastings City Council designated a park on Main Street as the "Municipal Park of Hastings" in honor of Mayor John H. Richardson. The United States Army Garrison at Fort Snelling was established in 1917 and it donated land to the city for development purposes. The city built a recreational complex on what is now State Highway 20 which included an arena, football stadium, tennis court, waterfalls, and other amenities for local soldiers and their families. In 1938, Hastings became one of six municipalities in Minnesota to join the United States Air Force Base Minneapolis-St Paul Airport which gave residents easy access to military services worldwide. In 1945, when World War II ended, most of these facilities were sold off or converted into civilian use by the USAF and they no longer serve as military bases today. However, some active military units still live within town limits including 2nd Infantry Regiment (Chinook) headquartered at Fort Snelling and 4th Brigade Combat Team Minnesota National Guard headquartered at Maple Grove Arsenal from 1941-1945 which are both part of Veterans Affairs Medical Center Minneapolis-St Paul hospital Campus since 1997.

Hastings, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of the Dakota Territory. The population was 3,846 at the 2010 census. Hastings has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and it is one of only a few communities in the Great Lakes region that still retains some of its traditional ways. The first Europeans to explore and settle in Hastings were French traders and fur-trappers who traveled through the area between 1682 and 1685. In 1849, Hastings was chosen as the site for a military garrison to protect against Sioux Indian attacks. The detachment remained until 1855 when it was disbanded due to financial reasons. In 1865, General John A. Nicolay established Fort Snelling on Hennepin County’s east side to guard against possible Sioux Indian invasions. This fort served as an important strategic outpost until 1876 when it was abandoned because of lack of funding. In 1889, Hastings became a town after being organized under territorial law by vote of residents. The first Mayor was Wm Calkins and the first Town Council consisted of six members with one seat reserved for an Sheriff or his deputies. In 1898, Hastings merged with neighboring village of Stonington which had also been organized under territorial law that year. After World War II, Harding County experienced rapid growth due to agriculture and industry which led to increased traffic on Highway 169 which caused problems for local officials who could not keep up with developments around their town center. In 1958, Hastings incorporated as a city under state government jurisdiction but retains certain aspects of its rural character including its role as an agricultural center and high school which offers classes in arts, sciences and engineering among other subjects
In 1867, a group of men from Hastings started a small trade center on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town quickly grew and by 1879, it had become an important trading post on the river. In 1898, Hastings was named one of the cities in Minnesota when Minneapolis was created.
