The Hastings, Minnesota Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community since 1916. Located on the north shore of the Mississippi River, the station provides law enforcement and emergency services in areas including Hastings, Buffalo Bayou, St. Johns River, and Cannon Beach. The station is responsible for conducting maritime patrols in both close water environments (e.g., near harbours) and offshore waters; conducts search and rescue operations; manages a marine reserve; provides education programs related to coastal safety; and responds to a variety of other emergencies. In 1935, the Hastings Coast Guard Station was established as part of the newly formed Duluth-Superior County Sheriff’s Department. In 1941, when Duluth became an incorporated city, it retained its agency status with the Hastings Coast Guard Station becoming part of that city’s police department. In 1951, when Superior County was dissolved into Ramsey County, the Hastings Coast Guard Station became part of that county’s new sheriff’s department. In 1971, when Ramsey County was disbanded into Polk County, the Hastings Coast Guard Station became part of that county’s new sheriff’s department once again. In 1998, when Polk County merged with Hennepin County to form a larger metropolitan area called Minneapolis-St Paul,the Hastings Coast Guard Station moved from its original location on Lahontan Island to be located within Minneapolis-St Paul proper. On July 1st 2003 Shore Patrol Unit 2 was placed in service at The Pigeon House on Nicollet Island after being donated by local restaurateur Donny Flynn along with all necessary equipment for what would become a long standing coast guard function at The Pigeon House - providing security for weddings/events on Nicollet Island during summer months & also providing law enforcement functions during winter months

The Coast Guard has been providing service to the American people for over eighty-five years. Our mission is to keep our citizens safe by providing a secure and efficient maritime system. The Coast Guard also provides assistance to local law enforcement when needed, including search and rescue operations. One of the most unique gifts that the Coast Guard has ever given was the gift of a helicopter. Helicopter gifts have come in many forms, but all share one common goal: making life easier for those in need. For example, the helicopters that are used by the Coast Guards can be used for Search and Rescue missions or as response vehicles during hurricanes or other disasters. Helicopters have even been used as props in motion pictures and TV shows! One of the earliest helicopters that was gifted to the Coast Guard was an N4A White Knight helicopter from Lockheed Martin Corporation. This helicopter had been donated by Sinatra Enterprises Inc., which owned a number of these aircraft. The donated piston-powered helicopter was #N4A1E serial number 51401 and it flew under the name “WhiteKnight”. It arrived at NAS Long Island on July 6th, 1944, just months after World War II ended! Since then, numerous helicopters have been donated to the Coast Guard by various sources, including Boeing Company (the first chopper donation came from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft), Albrook Aviation (the first chopper donation came from United States Marine Corps), Curtiss-Wright Airways (the first chopper donation came from Western Airlines), Sikorsky Aircraft (the first chopper donation came from Sikorsky Aircraft Heavy Industries), Pembroke Pines Naval Air Station/National Museum of Naval Aviation (Pembroke Pines Naval Air Station became home to one of America’s last operational Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopters) and others! These helicopters provide everyone who needs them with access to air support when necessary!
