Ham Lake is a small, rural community in the far northwest corner of Minnesota. It's about an hour and a half from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and two hours from Duluth. The population was 562 at the 2010 census, down from 724 at the 2000 census. The community is named for Ham Lake, which lies about four miles northeast of town on U.S. Highway 169. The lake's name comes from the French word "ham," meaning "a piece of land." The first permanent settlers in Ham Lake were Methodists who arrived around 1873 and built a chapel on the east side of Ham Lake. They also raised chickens and hogs there.
