During World War II, Japanese forces invaded Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 resulting in America’s entry into World War II via war with Japan. The Ham Lake area was first settled by the Chippewa in the mid 1800s. The first white person to come to Ham Lake was John Fitzpatrick in 1849. The area was designated as a reservoir for the Minneapolis Public Utilities company in 1913. In 1942, Ham Lake became a national recreation area and is still used for that purpose today.
