Airforce Gift History in Ham Lake, Minnesota began in the early 1940s when United StatesAAF General Curtis LeMay decided to establish a flying school in the town of Ham Lake. At first, the air force leased land from local farmers for use as an airfield and hangar. However, due to World War II funding shortages, the air force purchased additional land and established a permanent base in 1945. The Ham Lake School of Aviation was founded by General LeMay and his staff. From its inception until it closed in 1968, the school trained pilots for American Strategic Air Forces (ASAF) strategic bombing missions over Japan. Today,HamLake Airport is home to two USAF installations: The 6th Bomb Wing stationed at Keesler AFBand The 511th Test Wing assigned to Eglin AFB. These facilities support numerous operational operations including training pilots for joint exercises with other nations and providing accommodation for commands and units visiting Washington D.C., Europe or Asia. Each year approximately 2,500 students attend classes at Keesler AFB and 1,000 students attend Eglin AFB’s undergraduate program in Aerospace Science & Technology; both campuses offer variety of course options that accommodate student interests across multiple disciplines.
