The mining industry declined after World War I, but it resumed after the war when new sources were discovered. Today, Golden Valley is a bedroom community with a population of around 1,500 people. The town began as a farming community on the east bank of the Mississippi River. In 1858, Norwegian settlers arrived in what is now Golden Valley and founded a farmstead on land that had been donated by John Darnall. That year, they also constructed the first bridge across the river. Over time, other settlers arrived and established farms within Golden Valley's boundaries. By 1870, most of the original Norwegian settlers had died from disease or accident caused by natural disasters such as floods or Indian raids. Some remained behind to continue farming while others moved away to start their own families and businesses elsewhere in Minnesota or Iowa. In 1887, two Swedish immigrants came to MN to prospect for gold near Thief Lakeoui Falls on Hennepin County’s west side (now Hastings). They became successful miners and built homes along their diggings which still remain today- one example being at 112th Avenue S., just south of Highway 518A/Hennepin County Road 258A/ROAD 706A (the main access road leading into Golden Valley), close to where present day North Main Street meets old US highway 518A/Hennepin County Road 258A/ROAD 706A [ map ]. After finding no gold worth working for some years following their initial discovery attempts at Thief Lakeoui Falls (and continuing until 1903), these men sold all their properties back to Dutchman Jacobus de Valk & Company who continued operations up until 1906 when both companies went out of business due largely to lowered silver prices following World War I [ see map ]. Golden Valley was founded in 1854 by John Golden and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after the golden fields that lay to the west of it. The first Post Office was established in 1857, and the town began receiving mail from Minneapolis in 1871. The first store in Golden Valley opened its doors in1878. In 1915, the town had a population of just over 100 people. During World War I, local businesses produced food for soldiers on-the- battlefield. On October 15th, 1918, an air raid destroyed most of Golden Valley with only a few houses remaining standing. In 1949, Golden Valley became a city and went through rapid growth during the 1950s and 1960s as it became home to many high school students who commuting into Minneapolis for classes or spending their summers there. In 1970, Golden Valley annexed neighboring Iron Range which had a population of over 25K people at that time! Today, Iron Range is home to some much smaller communities within its boundaries such as Winona Lake and Hibbing but also has access to plenty of interstate highway exits making it easily accessible for both locals and tourists alike!
