Forest Lake is a census-designated place in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Forest Lake is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1887 by Wm. and Mollie Atwater as Fort Snelling on the east side of present-day Forest Lake. The name comes from a hunting ground near the site where they killed game for their family diet. They donated land to the town in 1911, making it one of its first areas set aside for suburban development. In 1969, when Interstate 84 was being construction through southern Polk County, work stopped at a crossing over Clearwater Creek just east of Forest Lake and an adjacent farm became known as "The Gap". After I-84 was completed and traffic resumed in that area, the original farmers began to reëntry their fields; however they did not receive compensation from Minnesota State Highway 6 until after SH 6 had been built south of them along Uptown Road (which runs concurrent with I-84). As more people moved into white subdivisions near downtown Minneapolis during the early 21st century, demand for property close to transportation hubs increased as well; so did prices for forested areas around Twin Cities neighborhoods such as ForestLake and Park City South Shore. In 2007, Anthony Foxx announced his candidacy for president of the United States and pledged to increase funding for public transit in order to improve access to jobs throughout America's cities—a policy he later implemented into law through New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's initiative called " Vision Zero ". Forest Lake is a small town in the state of Minnesota, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. Forest Lake is located on the south side of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles east of Minneapolis. The community was founded in 1871 by farmers from Aurora, Illinois. In 1915, Forest Lake became a city and remained so until it merged with Minneapolis in 1998. At its peak, Forest Lake had an estimated population of 910 people. However, this number declined over time and as of the 2010 census had decreased to 592 residents. In 1871, forested land along the southern bank of the Mississippi River were surveyed by David Dodge and others under the direction of John Nicolay and William Hennepin. On November 10th of that year they sold 1/2 mile (1 km) wide right-of-way for $25 to John Fetterman who named it "Forest Lake". The first settler to arrive at "Frosty Bottom" was George Weeden who arrived on December 17th. By 1840, there were 8 settlers living in what is now ForestLake: 5 men and 3 women; all but one were born within ten miles (16 km) radius of where they lived or within five miles (8 km) if traveling by stagecoach or wagon train westward from Aurora IL via Duluth MN then east through Hastings IA then north across Iowa into Manitoba Canada before turning south along Red River Valley returning to their native Illinois home on February 12th 1841). In 1915, when Forrest Lake became a city, forest products processing plants were established there including a horticulture research center which remains active today as part of Concordia University's School of Horticulture & Technology. The industries that have been most responsible for ForestLake's decline include suburban development adjacent to Interstate 94 which has damaged forests upstream while also driving up property values; automobiles fleeing high fuel prices which made production costs too costly; competition from neighboring towns such as Bloomington MN which also experienced high numbers during this period;uced manufacturing output due to advancements in other industries during World War II including textiles and automotive production;and changes in consumer behavior brought on by television programs like "Cheers" which helped increase restaurant traffic near highways while reducing demand for forest products
Forest Lake was a small community in central Minnesota. It is now a ghost town, and the only reminder of it is a small park on the edge of town. The community was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from the larger community of White Cloud. Forest Lake had two schools, one for grade school and one for high school. The population was about 350 people at its peak in 1920. After World War II, the population dwindled to about 100 people until it stopped growing altogether in the 1960s.
