The Forest Lake National Guard was organized on September 15, 1916. The first sergeant and three privates were appointed to the unit. They served for one year. On December 3, 1916, the order was issued that all men must display arms at all times while quartered in the town of Forest Lake. On January 1, 1917, it was decided that a Sergeant Major should be appointed to lead the organization.On May 6th of that year, orders were given that all men must report at Camp Dodge for duty from July 1-September 15th or they would be discharged without pay. The regiment remained inactive until October 1915 when it mobilized for World War I. It arrived in France on November 8th and served through December 14th of 1915. During its deployment it fought at Loos (May 9-18), Arras (July 7-14), and Vimy Ridge (November 9-15). After being honorably discharged from service on December 16th, 1918, the regiment returned home to Forest Lake on January 2nd 1919 as part of festivities celebrating America's entry into World War I

The Forest Lake National Guard was organized on October 1, 1916. The first unit to be raised in Forest Lake was the 114th Rifle Battalion of the Minnesota National Guard. On July 20, 1990 Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) arrived in Forest Lake with their UH-1 Huey helicopters for an amphibious assault against Jan van Buren's forces north of Da Nang City. After landing onshore and deploying its troops ashore through helicopter Landing Zone Bravo/Laguna Bay III they began their assault by airlifting infantry into positions overlooking Van Buren’s position from high altitude using HU-1D Bird Dog helicopters which had been specially modified for this purpose

Forest Lake is a small village in Douglas County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 914 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. In 1854, Nicholas DeWitt built a cabin on the site of today's Forest Lake. In 1907, he and his wife Anna married John Haines and moved to Forest Lake from their home in Maple Grove Township. They raised three children there: John (1907-1996), Anna (born 1913), and Rachel (1920-2009). They also became involved with many local organizations including the Northern Minnesota Agricultural society and the Masonic Lodge No. 765. On July 20, 1953, Nicholas DeWitt died at age 95 after a long and successful career as an agricultural philosopher and soil scientist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; Forest Lake had been his home for over 60 years.
