In 1916, Forrest High School opened as one of only two high schools in Polk County and one of only three public schools west of St Paul; it closed in 1973 due to budget woes and was replaced by nearby Mankato East Middle School. The first post office at Forest Lake was established on November 7, 1881, with Nils Rasmussen as its first mail carrier. In 1924, a sawmill opened and soon became a leadingstay of ForestLake's economy; it continued operating until 2006 when it closed because of economic conditions. The lumber industry declined after World War II but picked up again during the late 1960s through efforts by Village Manager Floyd Voit to promote tourism around ForestLake's many lakeshore properties that had been undeveloped for decades or more due to their prohibitive costs of maintenance alone (as opposed to hunting or fishing opportunities). Some $10 million has been invested into developing these property over the past few decades which has led directly to increased retail development downtown as well as growth of surrounding neighborhoods including Lakeside Heights and Parkview Hills - all within easy reach either via bike or car ride from downtown or other villages nearby such as Mankato or Minneapolis-St Paul! Today there are over 1,500 people living in forest lake while also supporting several businesses providing jobs for locals/workers throughout day & night!
