Forest Lake is a small town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 592 at the 2000 census. At the 2010 census, it had 706 residents. Forest Lake is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Forest" comes from a nearby sawmill that used to make lumber. The first permanent settler in Forest Lake was John Birch in 1851. Birch and his family built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street near the present day railroad Tracks and Park Drive. In 1862, when Green Bay and Chicago merged to form the Wisconsin State Packers Association, Birch applied for membership and received an email from president Julius Weismann inviting him to become one of Wisconsin's twenty member Packers associations across the Midwest. Birch accepted and became president of ForestLake Packer Lodge #2 with fellow Packers members George Stephenson (founder of Stephenson Mills) and Lewis Ransom (founder of Ransom Brewery). In 1865, when Forrestal became President pro tempore of the United States Senate after Ulysses S Grant resigned his office due to ill health, Richter established a post office at Forest Lake with mail service starting on July 1st 1865 under First Postmaster General Geo Fenton Richardson as interim president until problems could be resolved between Richardson's successor John Denton Jr., who also served as acting first postmaster general during Forrestal's absence, and Richardson himself about which more later... In 1887 Drury built what is now Stinson’s restaurant at 2127 Nicollet Avenue northeast of present day Forest Lake High School; he also founded Stinson’s Nursery on property adjoining his nursery where he installed feeders for his livestock until 1903 when all feed local but still usesFeed National Feed Store brand name today located east side road next to old school bus stop gone since 1954
Forest Lake was a small town in Minnesota until the late 1800s. The community was located on the banks of the Mississippi River and consisted of only a few homes and businesses. The cessation of logging in the area led to a gradual change in Forest Lake's demographics. By 1920, most residents were German immigrants who had fled Czechoslovakia during World War I. In 1924, Forest Lake absorbed the neighboring town of Black Diamond into its population. Black Diamond had been founded by Norwegian-American farmers who migrated to Minnesota after Akershus Gold Mines closed during the early 20th century. After foresting land for years, these settlers decided to build their own home on what would become Forest Lake. The original Post Office at Forest Lake opened on November 1, 1881, serving as an outpost for two other small towns along the river: Lillie and Clearwater Lakes. The first postmaster general was Jens Sverre Hvitand (1851-1924). In 1888, when ForestLake became a village, Paddy McMahon served as mayor for one year before resigning due to health problems. That year also saw the opening of a school that operated from an old farmhouse on Center Street until 1906; it later became known as Highland Park School District #5A. Between 1909-1920 there were three pastors who served at various churches in ForrestLake: Rev Dr John Murchison (born 1893), Rev Dr Harry Coyle (1896-1974) and Rev Dr William Ahern (1900-1984).
