The merger created a new military installation – NAVY BASE MINNEAPOLIS/ST LOUIS - that would provide more space than what had been available at NAS Fergus falls thus freeing up more money within DoD's budget for other priorities such as defense research and development programs that would have otherwise been impacted by base closures or realignment plans. Today, NAS Minneapolis/St Louis is one of three active US Navy installations located in Minnesota (the others are Marine Corps Base MPRI west Duluth and Army Garrison Pequot Lakes). Fergus Falls is a town in Mahnomen County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,993 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Saint Paul–Mahnomen Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fergus Falls was organized on July 1, 1851 and named for General David Fergus, who had been an officer in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Fergus Falls on December 12, 1852. At that time it was known as "New Lisbon". The name of the town originated with General John A. Macdonald who led troops into what is now Manitoba during the Canadian Rockies Expedition of 1872-1873 and decided to name the settlement after his superior general (the first Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba). The first store in town opened its doors on October 24, 1867 and continued to do so until 1918 when it closed due to lack of customers. The last store owner operated their business from his home until he died in 1984. In 1916, Fergus Falls became a city and incorporated under state law as such; however, it did not take full form until 1959 when Mayor Harry Lemberg submitted a petition for incorporation which gained approval from both MN State Legislature and then-Governor Orville Freeman In 1960s there were efforts to annex much larger townships surrounding Fergus Falls through annexation petitions but all but one were rejected by local officials because they felt that too much growth would be caused by people living too close together without proper zoning or infrastructure development
