Fergus Falls, Minnesota is a town located in the eastern Great Lakes Region of Minnesota. The population was 5,382 at the 2010 census. Fergus Falls is the county seat of Hennepin County. The first settler in what would become Fergus Falls was A. J. Stevens who arrived in 1872. He built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Fergus Falls and named it Stevensville after himself and his father-in-law, Alexander Stevens (1836-1902). The first store in town was opened by Nicholas King & Brothers in 1876 and served as a mercantile center for the area until it closed its doors in 1914. Downtown Fergus Falls began to grow around 1900 when developer John Barden purchased land from the federal government for a sawmill and lumberyard that he later developed into one of the largest commercial areas in central Minnesota. By 1915, Fergus Falls had over 20 businesses including five banks, two insurance companies, three restaurants, four churches and two hotels along with two schools: one high school and one elementary school. In 1937, following World War II when Minneapolis became an all-new city, Fergus Falls became part of Minneapolis proper with its own police department and post office while still maintaining its independent character as a community founded upon agriculture and commerce rather than professional or political institutions like those found within larger metropolitan areas during this era. The Main Street Business District designation given to downtown business districts throughout most of North America during this time period helped preserve many historic buildings downtown while also creating new opportunities for property owners to develop their properties into retail destinations complete with storefronts facing Market Street which continues to be an important shopping district today despite having evolved somewhat since its early days as a residential enclave for residents living near downtown business districts
