Farmington, Minnesota is home to the oldest coffeehouses in the United States. The first coffeehouse in Farmington was opened in 1867 by two men, Nicholas and John Fenton. It was located on Main Street, just north of the present day school district boundary. Three years later, a second coffeehouse opened on Second Avenue. This business operated for one year before being closed due to lack of business. In 1870, another coffeehouse called the Market replaced the Fenton-owned Second Avenue establishment. The Market’s location near downtown made it popular with locals and tourists alike; however, it failed to generate enough business to keep afloat. In 1872, Nicholas and John Fenton reopened their original farmington coffeehouse on Third Avenue near Shields Street; this time they managed the business from a premises that they had leased from Ebenezer Farnsworth. In 1806, Ulysses S Grant awarded Jens Weisse an exclusive contract to ship coffee southward through the Panama Canal on his Expedition into Central America (1809-1810). Weisse’s company soon became known as “The World’s First Coffee Company” due to its success shipping coffee throughout South America and Africa before landing at New York City in 1814 under Project Euler (the first successful containerized cargo delivery using steamboats). In 1912, Prince Ali bin Hussein of Saudi Arabia announced that he would establish a world empire by selling beans direct to consumers around the world. With this proclamation, coffee began its journey upended from an agricultural product into an international commodity that is now enjoyed by people across many cultures around the world. By 1914, whole bean coffee had become available for purchase all over Great Britain; within two years it was available all over North America too!
