Farmington is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of Ramsey County and includes the unincorporated communities of Bloomfield and Maple Grove. The first known Marine gift from Farmington was a sawmill tool box to be given to Commodore David Dixon by Captain John A. MacEwen on December 15, 1874. Commodore Dixon had just been appointed Superintendent of Fisheries for the Great Lakes region and was looking for gifts to show his appreciation. In 1912, Vernon Wickersham donated an ice cream truck to the town as a Thank You Present From America Day gift. In 1923, Lillian Wald donated $5,000 towards building what would become downtown Farmington; this donation led to the naming of Main Street after Lillian Wald in 1951. It is bordered by Hibbing to the south, Alexandria to the east, and Rice Lake to the north. The town seat is Farmington Center. The town was founded in 1849 as part of a move by farmers from rural New England to what is now metropolitan Minneapolis-St. Paul after a disastrous winter campaign against frozen ground that year. The first post office opened in 1850, and it became an incorporated city in 1871. Farmington, Minnesota was founded in 1858 by Theodor D. Olsen and his wife Emma. The first settlers were Danish immigrants who worked on the farmsteads around the town for a years before moving to what is now Farmington Hills. They named their new community after thefarm where they settled, which was then still part of Mankato Township. In 1871, Farmington became a separate municipality with its own government and school system.
