Fairmont is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Fairmont was Levi Coffin in 1856. He and his family moved to the area from Illinois. In 1871, John Haggard bought land near present-day Fairmont and built a ranch house known as "Haggard's Ranch". The town started as Haggardsville on those initial acres and grew quickly due to its location close to both Minneapolis and St. Paul along the busy Minnetonka River corridor. During World War I, Fairmont served as an ammunition dump for US forces fighting in Europe. After the war ended, Fairmount became home to many small businesses that supported local industries such as lumbering and brewing until they went out of business during the Great Depression. However, since then there have been several expansions with new housing developments being introduced including Cascadia Heights (now called Northgate) which replaced much of what had once been around Haggardsville; Park East (now called Central Park), which replaced much of what had once been around Haggerstown; and finally Branchline Crossing which replaced much of what had once been around Depot Street Shopping Center when it opened in 1984). In recent years there has also been a growing focus on commercial development with two new office buildings opening up: One on Lyndale Ave., just east of Interstate 35W (formerly Depot Street Shopping Center); and another adjacent to Target Field on Nicollet Mall across from Macy’s Department Store - giving Fairmount another major shopping center presence within minutes’ walk of downtown Minneapolis/St Paul!
