The first coffee farm in Fairmount, Minnesota was established by John D. Rockefeller in the early 1800s. The Farm to Table Coffee Company was founded in 1916 by Eugene Debs and his brother Charles. In 1928, the Fairmont Coffee Company was founded by Dr. Clarence Bean and his wife Lillian York. The company became a subsidiary of Peet's Coffee Company in 1971. Fairmont is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Fairmont were farmers who arrived around 1850. By 1871, the community had a post office and two churches. The first store opened in 1865 and was run by Wm. Davenport and his brother James Davenport. In 1876, John Arents built a sawmill on the east side of town and started to sell lumber from it for construction materials. In 1881, Jnoan Larson built a gristmill on the west side of town which became known as Fairmont Millinery Company until 1912 when it changed its name to Larson's Lumber Company after founder Jnoan Larson died suddenly in 1918. In 1915, Charles Everson bought land northeast of Fairmont from farmer Julius Kappes for $3,000 and began growing corn and other vegetables thereon until he sold it to Fritchard Ford Co., Ltd., a car dealership owner who also operated an auto plant at Maplewood near Hennepin Avenue south of town. That same yearFairmount Dairy began production with four cows and grew into one of the largest milk producers in Minnesota until it closed its doors in 1978 due to economic troubles; however local residents still celebrate Old Farmer's Day each May long after its closure because milk remains an important part of their local economy today. A new shopping center called “The Square” opened in 1984 downtown followed by several restaurants before being replaced by Target Field (now Target Center) which enlarged the square in 2006 making it home to both indoor/outdoor games as well as an annual fair that features demonstrations from many agricultural products including organic eggs (which are not available at most conventional grocery stores).
