Fairmont is a small town in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. Fairmont has been incorporated as a village since 1912. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairmont was John Sisk who arrived there in 1868 and named his land "Sisk's Township." In 1872, Samuel Aitken settled on an acre and a half of farm near the present day intersection of State Highway 20 and U.S. Route 12K (now State Highway 158). Elisha Richards also located a farm west of town in 1872 before moving to Cass County to start another homesteading community called Richardsville east of town on Clearwater Creek. By 1907, all five farmers had moved out because they could no longer afford to maintain their properties and were replaced by two families from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania who purchased 4 lots along Main Street for $2 each in 1907 andleased them to their descendants who have continued farming there ever since. In 1912, when Cass County was organized, Fairmont became one of its townships which included Stillwater and White Bear Laketowns within its boundaries until 1959 when those towns were merged into the new city of Minneapolis-St Paul. At that time Fairmont became an enclave within the larger municipality with its own government and economy separate from that of Minneapolis-St Paul proper
