The Coast Guard Gift History in Fairmont, Minnesota began in 1941 when the first Volunteer Coast Guard unit was activated. The Fairmont County Sheriff's Department donated a small sailing ship, the SS Samuel P. Morse, to be used as a training vessel for the Coast Guard. The first gifts given were cigarettes and candy to the Coast Guard members stationed at Grand Forks. In 1954, a new donation was made- a large tugboat called HMCS Arrowhead. This tugboat was donated by local businessmen who wanted to show their support for the Coast Guard. The next year, another donation- this time an engine farm- was made to help with the recruitment of officers and crew for the Coast Guard. The last gift from Fairmont County came in 1984 when a group of citizens donating money gathered together to donate an old fishing boat called HMS Dolphin. This boat had been abandoned on our coast and it became known as "the cutest boat ever." It is now used as storage for equipment for the local marinas. Today, there are more than 2,000 volunteers working across Canada and around America providing safety and security while promoting maritime culture through education and public service. The Coast Guard is a United States national service organization that provides emergency response and coastal security. The Coast Guard's mission is to maintain law and order on the nation's coasts, by providing maritime security, protecting critical infrastructure, assisting in search and rescue operations, conducting research, and commemorating America's maritime heritage. The Coast Guard was founded on May 12th, 1915 as the Revenue Cutter Service. The name was changed to the Coast Guard on September 16th of that year. On December 10th 1913 the first lifeboat was launched from New York City harbor. In 1939 the first helicopter flew into service with the Coast Guard. Today there are over 2200 helicopters available across the country for use by coast guard personnel or other agencies. In addition to its role as a provider of coastal security and emergency response services, the Coast Guard also has roles in promoting fishing industry development through enforcement of laws related to fisheries; reducing litter while Operating Aquaculture Research Facilities (ARCFs), which provide public access to fresh water resources essential for marine life; providing education about marine science and ecology at high school levels; serving as a NPS partner in stewardship programs such as riparian management; working with state governments to develop cooperative beach management plans; participating in oceanographic research initiatives including monitoring climate change at sea; providing support for AmeriCorps VISTA members who serve in local communities around the country;and more recently- established counterterrorism functions such as counterdrug smuggling efforts off American soil along our borders with Mexico

The community is named after a hotel that once stood in the town. The Fairmont was built in 1906 and it has been a popular tourist destination for many years. Fairmont, Minnesota is a town in Nemage County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 331 at the 2010 census. Fairmont is located on the east side of the Nemage River and it part of the Duluth-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Fairmont were two families who arrived in 1853 from Illinois. The first post office in Fairmont was established in 1855, and the townsite was laid out by a group of men led by John Hildebrandt. A sawmill and grist mill were built early on and continued to be operation until 1907 when they closed down due to lack of customers. In 1916, a group of businessmen agreed to buy land south of town for $1 an acre (0.50 km²). They named their new development Fairmount Park after Fairmount Road which runs through the center of town. The park became one of the largest public gardens in America with over 6 million plants and flowers grown between 1916 and 1978. As mentioned earlier, there are several reasons why Fairmont has been so important to Duluth-St Paul metropolitan area since its establishment as a city in 1896: First, it contains many major businesses that have served both cities well; second, its location within easy reach of most people makes it an ideal place to live; third, its close proximity to transportation hubs gives it great potential for growth; fourth, its historical significance makes it a valuable resource for research into local history; finally, its unique architecture – including some notable Federal buildings such as the State Capitol Building – makes it an attractive target for touristsboth during summertime when things get wilder outside than usual and during fall/winter when conditions may be moreserious inside than outside
