The Fairmont Army Depot (AD) is a military facility located in central Minnesota, United States. It was opened on October 1, 1907 as the Fairmont Arsenal and Ammunition Plant. The depot served as the armament storage area for the National Guard of Minnesota until May 1955, when it became the main armaments storage area for the Army. In 1960, AD was transferred to the Department of Defense and renamed Fort Snelling Army Depot. The name changed again in 1977 to Fort Snelling Armory after being donated by General Carl Sargent. On July 15, 1984, AD became part of the newly created National Military District headquartered at Red Lake Heights in Minneapolis. The arsenal remained an active armamentstorage center until its closure on December 6, 1992 due to budget cuts caused by then-President George H. W. Bush's administration.[1] Since its closure, many items that were stored at AD have been auctioned off or used in various exhibits and documentaries around the country such as "Army Weapons Of World War II" which toured across America from 1991-1994[2], "The American Infantry Museum" which is located adjacent to Fort Snelling Armory[3], "Weapons Of War: A History Of Firearms In Modern Warfare" which toured across America from 2004-2006[4], "Auction: A History Of Arms And Armour" held at Green Bay Soldier's Memorial Museum on April 24th & 25th 2006[5], etc...

The Fairmont Army Garrison was founded in 1894 as a military post on the banks of the Minnesota River. The garrison grew to include a regiment of infantry and cavalry, as well as an artillery battery. In 1916, it became one of the first units in the United States Military to be mobilized for World War I. The Fairmont Army Garrison served in Europe until 1918, when it was disbanded.
Fairmont is a small town in western Minnesota, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1874 by Danish immigrants from Sønderborg, Denmark. The name Fairmont comes from a farmstead called "Familiehof", which was located about three miles (5 km) east of the present-day town center on what is now County Road D2. In 1876, the first store in Fairmont opened and sold goods such as flour, bacon, cheese, eggs, and milk to farmers in central Minnesota. In 1886, Wm. Averill built a school for Fairmont residents and operated it until 1902 when it became an academy; he also donated land for a church and cemetery. In 1924, brothers Hagen and Harry Olson purchased 1/3 of all the acreage within Fairmont Township for $10 per acre ($ today). They named their property "Olsons Prairie" after their father's older brother Ole Hansen (1819-1892). This property would be home to many important businesses and people throughout its history including Hagen's restaurant chain OLDSKAP (now known as Olsen Brothers Restaurants), Willy Nelson's ranch headquarters during his days as manager of the NFL Vikings football team (the first professional American football team), Nordstrom Rack & Co.'s department store chain ("Nordstrom"), KARE Radio Corporation headquarters until 1984 when they moved into new building on University Avenue adjacent to Northwestern State University (later NSU), Wildcat Stadium from Minneapolis Duluth Eskimo Hockey Club which played there from 1936-1978; Stocksingers Brewery started brewing beer here in 1955 before moving to Stillwater MN later that same year A post office called "Farmington" servedFairmount from 1878 until 1889 when it was discontinued because of increased competition from Elmira NY Post Office (#1 at that time). In 1895-96 Gossett ran an unsuccessful campaign to get an act passed establishing a mail service between Fargo ND (& Great Falls MT) via Winnipeg MB & Fairmount MN From 1893 until 1907fairmount had no telephone service – only 3 lines were available with 1 line per house! In 1912 telephones were added thru Stations Service Company but services stopped effective Sept 1914 . . . Phone company turned over operation to Duluth Telephone Company effective Nov 1913
