Elk River is a small, rural stream located in the United States state of Minnesota. The name Elk River was given to it by white settlers who named it for elk, which they thought abundant in the area. The first time Elk River was surveyed as part of the Oregon Treaty (1846), its mouth was at an intersection with the river's present-day border with Wisconsin. When the treaty was drawn up, there were no elk in this area and no way to determine which side had rights to the name because it wasn't mentioned in any treaty documents. As a result, many people throughout history have called Elk River simply "the river" or "the stream". The first European explorers and traders that visited this area were Frenchmen Jean Nicolet and Pierre Dorion. They traveled along both banks of the river and named several areas after animals they saw including: La Prairie (a location near modern day Minneapolis) after a herd of deer they observed while traveling; Fort Snelling after Lieutenant Colonel John Snelling, commander of Indian Affairs during 1812-1815; and la Forêt d'Elk where they found logs filled with game from an elk that had been killed by hunters on nearby Lake Dulas. In 1794, Finnish trader Pekka Nurmi discovered oil on an unoccupied piece of land between present day Elk Rapids and Granite Falls northeast of what is now Elk River. This discovery led to new exploration for oil around this region before production began on larger rigs about two miles upstream from where Nurmi discovered his oil field in 1903. By 1898, all remaining wild resources within three miles of Elk Rapids had been exploited commercially yielding $2 million worth of oil per year although much additional acreage remains undeveloped today due to environmental concerns about potential spills from large drilling operations years downstream. In 1901, when Minneapolis became a city, developers bought land abutting below Nicollet Street just north of downtown for use as a waterfront development known as Grand Central Park().
