The air force gift history of Elk River, Minnesota begins with the establishment of the United States Air Force in 1947. The community of Elk River was chosen to be a site for the new USAF base because it had both an ample number of housing units and a well-developed infrastructure. The first wing was established in 1949 and the Base remained operational until 1973. During that time, unit personnel flew more than 1 million hours in missions across North America. In 1974, as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear, the USAF conducted its largest deployment to date when 337 aircraft participated in an operation against Cuba. Since then, numerous other deployments have taken place throughout the region including Operation Southern Watch, Desert Storm and Hurricane Katrina. These operations have placed immense strain on our airforce assets while providing crucial support to our troops and citizens. Today, the USAF operates three wings located at Elk River:the 343rd Air Wing which is responsible for flying fighter jets;the 349th Air Wing which provides ground support;andthe 476th Air Wing which provides bomber service. Additionally, there are numerous other facilities available within walking distance of the AFB such as a AMC hangar and storage areas for military fuel tanks. In total, we operate more than 2200 active duty Aircraft Units across North America dealing with a wide variety of mission tasks including general aviation;combat search and rescue;interdiction;supporting Special Ops Forces;and homeland security missions just to name a few! It is without question that these days “The Empire Strikes Back” as it were – USAF has been conducting extensive worldwide deployments since World War II making it oneofAmerica’s most impressive global capabilities! While this may come at some cost (e.g., deploying fewer reservists), it is clear that our Armed Services continue to play an important role not only domestically but globally by providing essential airlift capability and resources abroad!

The aircraft was originally donated by Boeing MSN 727-200NG (Serial No. 9AFF109/PK) which previously served as the squadron's primary aircraft at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.

Elk River is a small, but important, tributary of the Missouri River. It flows through the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and joins the Missouri near St. Anthony Falls in Minnesota. The river was named after Elk Island in the Duluth region of Minnesota, which is about 17 miles from its confluence with the river. The first Europeans to visit Elk Island were French fur traders in 1684. They named it Nouvelle-France because of its newness to them at that time. The Dutch built a trading post on Elk Island in 1695 and called it Oude Nieuw Amsterdam (Old New Amsterdam). In 1712, France acquired Fort Snelling from Sweden and renamed it Quebec City after itself; this change made Elk River part of Canada rather than America. After France lost control of Canada in 1867, Manitoba took over responsibility for the river and changed its name to Moose Jaw Creek to avoid confusion with Quebec City's official name (see below). The forest around Elk River was burned in 1855 as part of a campaign against Native Americans who had been living there for centuries and were using the land for hunting, fishing, and farming purposes. The fire also destroyed many homes and barns on nearby Isanti Peninsula. A few years later, Congress established an act providing for extinguishment of any Indian title to lands within Ulysses S Grant Park south of downtown Minneapolis; this happened just days beforeelk island was burned again by settlers looking for game animals that they believed had been taken from their territory by Indians during previous hunting trips there (see history lesson: "The Fires That Burned elk island"). In 1907, construction began on what would become one of Minneapolis' most famous landmarks: Nicollet Mall—the first mall in America built specifically for retail shopping—and it opened two years later. This development helped create a large new population center within walking distance of much needed jobsites across downtown Minneapolis; today Nicollet Mall remains one of cityscape's biggest attractions . In recent years, much progress has been made toward improving water quality along both sides of Nicollet Mall; however more work still needs to be done in order to maintain or improve public health conditions throughout the entire mall area .
