Eden Prairie was founded in 1856 by John Aikens and his brother-in-law, James Kline. It was named after Englishman Edward Eden who had been imprisoned there in 1795 for saying that God created everything without human help. In 1870, a post office called "Eden Prairie" was established and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1862, when Dakota Territory was organized, Eden Prairie became part of it and continued to serve as its first municipal government until 1872 when it became a county seat under territorial jurisdiction. The first courthouse was erected here in 1872 and remains one of Eden Prairie's most prominent landmarks today. The population of Eden Prairie grew rapidly from its early days as a small town to over 50,000 by 1910 thanks to agricultural production and other growth opportunities brought about by new transportation technologies such as automobiles and air travel. Economic development has since followed with several high-profile businesses opening up shop here including Macy's (1947), Sears (1957), Levi Strauss & Co.(1977), Target(1999) and JCPenney (2005). In recent years, much attention has also been given to downtown Eden Prairie which underwent significant renovation/updating project beginning in 2006 which saw the addition of new retail space along with much needed infrastructure improvement such as better access to parking spaces and sidewalks throughout the core area while preserving some older architecture elements such as storefronts built into hillsides overlooking downtown square footage amounting to a $100 million investment overall

The community started as a small farming town on the edge of what is now Bloomington-Normal. In 1881, settlers decided to move into this new area because they believed it would be more peaceful than where they were living in Iowa. The name Eden Prairie was chosen because it sounded like an ideal place to live: "a beautiful spot on high ground surrounded by woods." After settling in, the farmers began raising crops and raising livestock. They also built their first homes here. In 1902, the first school opened in Eden Prairie. This was a great success and led to more people moving into the community. In 1927, Eden Prairie had its first post office! This addition helped make life easier for everyone in the townspeople and made it easier for them to get around town when needed or wanted something. Thanks to all of these efforts and others that have come since then, today Eden Prairie is one of Minnesota's most vibrant communities – with plenty of things to do and see! Some significant events that have shaped this community include: The opening of Interstate 94 in 1973 changed everything for Eden Prairie; it brought so much traffic that everything began needing special care (eager drivers usedto smash through windows just to take a look). That same year also saw what is considered one of the biggest changes ever seen within Eden Prairie when Mayor Harry Sargent announced plans for an expansion project that would add 8 acres (3 hectares) of parkland onto downtown property – making it possible for people living near downtown not only access public space but also build their own homes! It wasn't long before plans were underwayfor another major development within walking distance – this time called South Park Place after nearby South Park Shopping Center which had been founded two years earlier!
