East Bethel, Minnesota is located in the upper Midwest and has been a part of the United States for over 100 years. The community was founded in 1854 by German immigrants and has since grown to be one of the most culturally rich areas in the country. East Bethel features a mix of pioneer culture with more recent influences from both European and American settlers. The community is also home to a variety of cultural events, such as Oktoberfest and its annual Harvest Festival. The town was named after Easton, Pennsylvania, where many of the original Germans settled. In 1854, three brothers founded what would become East Bethel on land that they had acquired from their father. The brothers built a house, began trading goods with other towns in the area, and soon enough they had a population of around 20 people. They started selling goods at local fairs and festivals until they developed an infrastructure that allowed them to build their own storehouse and grow crops. In 1870, another brother joined them and together they formed what would eventually become the present-day company town name – East Bethel Manufacturing Company (EBMC). EBMC became one of America’s largest manufacturers during the early 20th century thanks to its success in producing agricultural products such as flour, potatoes, cheese, lumber, soybeans, applesauce (the first commercial product made from apples), eggs – all while still shipping products overseas. During World War II much of EBMC’s production was turned towards making munitions for American troops fighting abroad. Howeverchery operations were also conducted hereabouts during this time as well; these provided jobs for local residents who supplied animal parts used in war efforts including riflescopesights assembly lines for optics components; dies for stamping ammunition cases; hogsheads filled with kerosene for illuminating fires; ovens used to bake bread…the list goes on! After the war ended however EBMC reverted back to its prewar mode: manufacturing agricultural products such as flour, potatoes/zucchini/applesauce/flour mixes etc., housing units (which continued into the 21st century), provides services like plumbing & heating systems(until 1984); electioneering services through volunteers called “Election Honoraires” which collected signatures from citizens wishing to have their names put on ballots given out free at county fairs throughout Minnesota; currently operates gift shops providing traditionalMinnesota items like cookies or candy bars not found elsewhere !!! All told there are some 2 dozen businesses operating within 1 ½ square miles radius encompassing 300 individual households !! This amount does not include services provided by churches & synagogues which comprise even larger portions of our economy !! Today there are several schools inEast Bethel- four high school campuses combined with two middle Schools-one Kindergarten through 8th grade as well as two elementary schools which provide education up through First Grade !!! governmental entities providing various forms governmental service including law enforcement(through police officers available 24 hours per day 7 days per week ); fire truck service(through volunteer firefighters) ; ambulance service !!! These agencies serve those within 1 ½ square miles radius plus an additional 350+ households situated beyond ! There are no zoning laws forbidding any form Of business enterprise !!! No wonder we can call ourselves “The Village” ??? today it is home to over 350 active businesses !!
The village of East Bethel was founded in 1851 as a result of the construction of the Nicollet Canal. The village grew rapidly and by 1871 it had reached its present size. In 1916, the United States Supreme Court ruled in "Plessy v. Ferguson" that black Americans were not allowed to enjoy the same rights as white Americans under the Constitution. This ruling led to widespread social unrest across the country andEast Bethel experienced some of this turmoil. In 1932, following Franklin D. Roosevelt's election as President, new zoning laws were passed which limited East Bethel's development potential. This caused a major decline in population and business activity within the village until recent years when community support for local businesses has helped revive economic growth.
