Military gift history in East Bethel, Minnesota began with the arrival of the United States Army in 1854. The army moved into what is now East Bethel and established a military post. In 1861, the army closed up shop in East Bethel and left for Fort Snelling,Minnesota. In 1865, the army reopened its post and moved into town. This time, it was permanent and called Fort Snelling. The fort served as a barracks for soldiers and also housed a library and an armory. During this time, the community helped to raise money for the army by selling goods such as flour, butter, cheese, apples, oats, potatoes and other items. The fort served as a base of operations for troops during the Civil War. It was here that General George Armstrong Custer lost his life on July 5th of 1876 while leading his cavalry unit against Native Americans at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument near present-day Minneapolis. After the war ended in 1865, Ft Snelling reverted to civilian control but continued to serve as a storage depot until 1870 when it was donated tothe city ofEast Bethel by Major John Alder Stroud Sr.. The city used it as an arsenal until 1886 when it was purchased by Colonel James Pillsbury who used it as a training ground for troops before he founded Pillsbury Aircraft Corporation in 1919 which became Rockwell International Corporations Incorporated today. The United States military has been present in East Bethel, Minnesota since the Revolutionary War. The first American soldiers were arrived here in 1775 when Capt. John Richardson and Lt. Joseph Warren were sent to quench the thirst of the Mohawk Indians. The first post office was established in East Bethel on July 8, 1857. On November 3, 1865, the first public school opened in this community after a $5 donation from Mrs. Julia Sibley Tucker. In 1942, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and many Japanese citizens were killed or injured in the attack. This caused a large population shift within the town and many people left for America as refugees during World War II. From 1945-1951, there was an Army Air Forces Base here which functioned as an airfield for bomber planes and bombers stationed throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa during World War II before it was closed down due to budget cuts by Congress. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home- some went on to become farmers while others worked their way up through the ranks of their respective services until becoming commanding officers or generals during peacetime periods starting with Stryker Corps deployments here after 9/11 (See also: Ulysses S Grant) Since then, East Bethel has seen various incarnations of different branches of service including Peace Corps volunteers; Marines; Soldiers’ Families Association; Veterans Affairs Medical Center; First Baptist Church (now Chrismas Eve Services & Retail Store); Northwest Health District; Hennepin County Regional Jail; Vikings football team (1996-2002) and now Blue Cross Blue Shield Minnesota plan members who have access to multiple health benefits plans available here at no cost to them (See also: Military weddings).
East Bethel, Minnesota is an unincorporated community in southwestern Minnesota, United States. It lies on the border of Hennepin County and Dakota County, and is bordered by rural communities of the same name to the east and west. The community had a population of 602 as of the 2010 census. The area now occupied by East Bethel was first settled in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants who were seeking land north of the Black Hills. East Bethel was named for nearby East Point on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly during the early years of this century, thanks to its location at a junction of two railroad lines, which made it easy to sell goods and services to settlers in surrounding counties. In 1916, East Bethel became one of six towns incorporated within Dakota County; it remains an unincorporated community today. Today, East Bethel features a variety of businesses including a library, health care provider, post office, convenience store/grocery store and several restaurants and bars. Agricultural production still dominates most aspects of life here; hayraising is a common pastime for residents around April through October when their fields are in bloom.

The first permanent settler in what is now East Bethel was Elias Nordstrom in 1854. A post office called "Bethel" was established in 1858, and remained in operation until 1888. In 1907, a school Constructed by the Minneapolis-based Northern Pacific Railway named after Methodist Episcopal Bishop John Leland Driessen opened at what is now Main Street and Lake Avenue. There were also a few residences built at this time near where the School now stands. Population growth continued to occur throughout the 20th century as new homes were constructed along roads leading into town from surrounding farms and villages. By 1960, there were over 1,000 people living within reach of downtown East Bethel through commerce and transportation options alone. Withdrawn federal funding for Amtrak led to increased traffic and parking problems on main street during peak hours; however, citizens have worked together to address these issues through public works projects such as widening sidewalks and adding bike lanes which have helped reduce congestion on major streets while still providing access to downtown business districts evening and morning hours.. As recently as 2000, East Bethel had an estimated population of 875 residents; however its decline began during that decade with decreasing birth rates among young adults combined with increasing retirement age among older residents – all trends that continue today albeit at a slower pace due to changing demographics within the community itself as well as statewide economic conditions..
