Eagan, Minnesota is a small town located in the Hibbing and Morrison County areas of Minnesota. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Eagan is one of the oldest towns in Minnesota, founded on February 15, 1858 by John A. Hagerty. It is named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, Eagan became a city and has since grown to be one of the most populous towns in Iowa County. The first post office opened in Eagan on February 15, 1858. The first settler in Eagan was Samuel Farnsworth who arrived with his family from New York City on November 3, 1857. Farnsworth built a log cabin on what is now Third Street and lot 5A which he named "Farnsworth's Grove." On October 13, 1860 James Laughlin set up shop as a general store and post office at what is now Fourth Street and Second Avenue. The first school was established in Eagan on December 8th by Mrs. Sarah Gillett using donated land next to her home on Third Street near present day First Avenue). Mrs. Gillett taught school until December 1861 when she married Methodist minister Rev Wm Fenton (1812-1876). He organized an academy for girls that opened September 1865 which continues today as Dakota Wesleyan University In 1907, after being annexed by neighboring Hibbing, Eagan became part of the new city of Hibbing On January 1st 1906 Mayor Amherst Jenssen approved plans for a water tower to be erected at SeventhStreetandFirst Avenuewestofthechurchisdowntownonproperty belonging to Judge Augustus Sutter (1856-1925) along with lots adjoining it extending northward to EighthStreetnorthwestofthe church downtown During World War I local businesses such as Charlie's Auto Repair stored supplies for local troops while they were deployed overseas Eogan also had its own military detachment during World War I known as Company B 9th Infantry MN National Guard Unit
