Cottage Grove is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the banks of the river Saint Croix. The population was 46,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is home to Mayo Clinic and many other large businesses and services. The first European settlers in what became Cottage Grove were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1636 and named their new settlement Nieuw Amsterdam after their old home in Holland. In 1854, two German farmers by the name of Kiesel settled there also, naming their farm Kesselheim after their family's ancestral estate near Cologne, Germany. The first post office was established at Cottage Grove on July 1, 1855; it was renamed Maynardville in 1887 after John A. Maynard, a Rear Admiral in US Navy who served during the Mexican War as aide to General Winfield Scott and afterwards as Commissioner of Indian Affairs under President Grover Cleveland. Cottage Grove began as a small farming community with about 20 families when it was incorporated as a village on December 3, 1907. Its land had been donated by Olmsted Brothers Sons & Co., which controlled much of eastern Minnesota agricultural land at that time; they built four churches and numerous homes for its residents before selling most of it off in 1916 to promote town growth through annexation into neighboring municipalities (including Hennepin County). In 1927, residents voted to adopt a new government form known as "cityhood". On January 1, 1928, cityhood became official when voters approved an ordinance establishing planning boundaries for future cities throughoutMinnesota; Cottage Grove would be included within those boundariesullafter becoming one of Minneapolis' original six neighborhoods (the others being Harlem Heights/Englewood/Merrill Park/University Village/Northwest Side). As another example of how annexations promoted growth within towns acrossMinnesota – often despite resistance from some residents – Cottage Grove annexed more than once over ensuing years until it reached its current total size: 10 square miles (24 square kilometers).
