The first national guard unit in Cottage Grove was organized on October 1, 1876. The unit was known as the Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Minnesota. The regiment served for three years and then disbanded on September 30, 1880.
On July 5, 1903, the Minnesota National Guard Unit #1 was reorganized into a battalion under the command of Maj. Gen. John A. McCloy Jr.. On January 15, 1907, the battalion became a brigade under Brigadier General James Hickey and then Brigadier General Edward Biddle on January 26, 1907. On November 12, 1912, brigades were redesignated divisions and all units were redesignated brigades on December 1st. On May 2nd 1917 the brigade became an autonomous division and was renamed 3rd Division of the National Guard (3ND GOVT DIVISION).
On February 14th 1921 3rd Division activated at Camp Nelson near Plymouth to serve in World War I as part of 10th United States Army Group Center which also included divisions from Minnesota (9TH US ARMY DIVISION), Wisconsin (10TH US ARMY DIVISION), Nebraska (11TH US ARMY DIVISION) and Iowa (15TH US ARMY DIVISION). After being demobilized in 1923 3rd Division returned to service in 1924 as part of 2nd Brigade Combat Team 7th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Snelling before deploying to France in 1940 where it fought with 6th Armoured Division during World War II as part of Ninth Army Group North commanded by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery."National Guard history: A timeline"
In 1946 all military troops were converted into civilians called "National Guardsmen", however 3rd Division remains a military unit until it is discharged or retired by order of Congress or Department OF Defense Directive 502-50/2D dated August 25th 1951. In 1957 Third Brigade Headquarters moved from Minneapolis to Hibbing
In 1960 Third Brigade Headquarters moved back to Minneapolis again when First Brigade Headquarters relocated from Hibbing
In 1996 Third Brigade HQ relocated back to Cottage Grove when Second Brigade HQ relocated from Hibbing

Cottage Grove is a small town in the United States. The population was 3,609 at the 2010 census. It is located in Washington County. The first settlers in Cottage Grove were farmers who arrived around 1851. They set up their homes on the north side of the river and began to cultivate maize, beans, and other crops. By 1870, they had built a few stores and a churches. In 1882, Cottage Grove became a township. In 1915, it became an incorporated village. The population peaked at 11,000 in 1950 but then declined gradually until it reached its current level of 3,609 in 2010. There are no public schools within walking distance of most residents so basic education is provided through private institutions such as homeschooling or charter schools. The economy of Cottage Grove is primarilybased on agriculture which accounts for over 60% of employment hereabouts. Although there are some small businesses that do not rely entirely on agriculture, many people here work for either local governments or state government services that are delivered right to their doorsteps – including utility bills and vehicle registrations!

Guardsmen and women serve anywhere from short-term deployments to three years or more on active duty; many serve multiple deployments at one time. They can be called up for any reason – leaving their families behind – including peaceful protests, natural disasters ( earthquakes or hurricanes ), peacekeeping operations (e.g., Afghanistan), or training exercises ( Exercise Iron Man ). Cottage Grove is a small town in the Minnesota County of Ramsey. The population was 6,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. Cottage Grove was founded in 1854 as a farmstead on the site of present-day Cottage Grove High School. The first post office in Cottage Grove was established in 1872. The name "Cottage Grove" was chosen because it had been recommended by a group of farmers who were surveyors for the electric company that would be built near the town. In 1885, Cottage Grove became an incorporated village and continued to use its original name until 1917 when it changed to its current spelling. When Prohibition began in 1919, many businesses closed including several grocery stores which left their proprietors high and dry. However, other businesses soon reopened including a blacksmith shop and a bakery which functioned until 1951 when they too closed due to prohibition being repealed. In 1950, Congress passed the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA), which provided financial assistance to small businesses throughout America to help them revive their economies during the tough times following World War II. This helped create new jobs and increase consumer demand for goods made by small businesses across America which then contributed to economic growth within Cottage Grove over time. Today, many old buildings still remain from when Cottage Grove was startup with various shops and restaurants located inside or outside of these buildings dating back more than 50 years ago!
Cottage Grove was founded in 1853 by a group of farmers from the town of Stillwater. The town was named for the small cottage that once stood there, and the first post office was established in 1856. After years of growth, Cottage Grove grew to include a total of thirty-six businesses by 1898. In 1916, the city of Cottage Grove was born when the Minnesota Legislature merged villages in northern Minnesota into one political unit. That same year, Cottage Grove's first city hall was built on East Fourth Street. The city hall served as both a local government center and administrative headquarters until it burned down in 1978. In 1960, Cottage Grove became an urban area when it incorporated as a city under state law. That same year, its first police department was formed and its first fire Department became operational. In 1974, the City Council authorized the construction of a new downtown building to serve as both municipal offices and future economic development opportunities for the community. The current Municipal Building is located on Main Street in central Cottage Grove and has been home to various municipal services since its construction
