As the world began to change in the early 1800s, coffee became an important part of many cultures. One of the first places where coffee was roasted and consumed was in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. The area now known as Cottage Grove was founded in 1853 by Capt. John Hennepin and his wife, Nellie. When they arrived in this area, they found a community that had been abandoned by its previous occupants because of wood-pestilence. The captain decided to make coffee and he soon discovered that the beans were very good. The first coffee house in Cottage Grove opened its doors on July 8, 1853. It was called The Dutchman's Coffee House and it served only coffee until 1865 when a new store opened which became known as The American Ice Cream Shop. This business operated for more than 50 years until it closed down in 1951. In 1863, Capt. Hennepin also started a grocery store which he called The General Store and later changed its name to The Federal Grocery Store before finally closing down in 1966 due to economic reasons. Throughout the 1800s, different people from all over Central America brought their talented hands with them when they migrated here to work on farms or start businesses of their own (Fletcher 1948). As time passed, these immigrants added their own unique flavor to the local coffee culture (Kramer 2006). Today there are several locations around town that still serve up great artisanal coffees . Cottage Grove is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Cottage Grove is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Bloomington to the east, Eden Prairie to the north, and Maplewood to the west. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Cottage Grove were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1854. They named their land "Villa Hill" after their home country's capital city of Stockholm. Over time, other Europeans came to live here too: Dutch farmers in 1872-1873, Germans in 1881-1882, Britons in 1886-1887 (later replaced by Americans), Canadians in 1912-1914 (the last group being replaced by Swedes), and Frenchmen from Quebec City who landed around 1916. In 1907, a group of local schoolteachers purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of forested land south of present day Main Street and east of Snelling River for use as a public school district. The name "Cottage Grove" was chosen for this new community because its then-new residents' residences were typically built near rural cottages with several rooms typical of cottage homes at that time. A post office called Cottage Grove was established in 1907, and remained operational until it closed on December 15th 1970. There have been no mailboxes or services located within Cottage Grove since then! Today's economy centers around healthcare services such as medical care and outpatient surgery; retail businesses such as supermarkets; restaurants; cafes; pet stores;ball fields;and golf courses – all located within walking distance of one another either downtown or off main streets like Snelling River Road or Court Avenue. Shopping areas include Targetcenter just outside downtown on Snelling River Road between Highway 6 & I-35W exit 114B & Main Street while nearby Mall Of America offers more than 20 types of retailers including AMC theaters chain along with numerous sporting events venues which can be easily accessed via I-275 exit 284G & US Highway 169 corridor into Twin Cities area including MTS Centre Stadium/Arts District located just blocks away from town center on Nicollet Ave close to light Rail station light rail line . Cottage Grove is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The town was established in 1873 as a result of land grants from the government of Canada. Cottage Grove was named for Hilda Ladd, wife of one of the first settlers, John Ladd. The first post office opened in 1874 and remained in operation until 1912. c 2005 it merged with neighboring Burnsville to form a new City called Maplewood beyond the boundaries of former Cottage Grove. The settlement that would become Cottage Grove started as a small farming community near present day Burlington Avenue and Interstate 94 on the east side of Ramsey County about midway between Minneapolis and St Paul. By 1880, people had built homes around a waterwheel powered by an underground stream that ran through their townsite. In 1887 three men—John Wolkentin, George Devine and Charles Latimer—founded what would become known as "TheLatimer Coal Mines". Over time these mines became increasingly important to the economy and were used to produce lumber and other products such as coal forinternal combustion engines and boilers; milling flour; cheese; apples (the first trees were planted in 1888); potatoes; gasoline (the first gasoline station was built in 1893) In 1905 when Ramsey County was created from parts of Dakota Territory it included all or part of modern-day Morris Heights/Cottage Grove within its boundaries including portions now located inside Maplewood In 1911 when school district consolidation took placewithin Ramsey County communities within Maplewoodincluding Cottage Groveand Morris Heights amalgamated into one school district administered by the newly created School District #2 which included both townships
Cottage Grove, Minnesota was founded in 1855 by Captain George S. Goodyear as a small farming community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town quickly grew and became a center for trade and education in the area. In 1907, Cottage Grove joined the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and remained an integral part of that region until it merged with St.Paul into one city in 1912. By 1932, Cottage Grove had become a largely rural township with only 2 percent of its population living in urban areas. However, through hard work and dedication to its citizens, Cottage Grove has since regained some of its former industrial glory and is now known for its significant agricultural production as well as its rich cultural heritage
