Coon Rapids is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Ramsey County and has the lowest population density of any municipality in the county. Coon Rapids was established on a bend in the Cedar River and became a post office on February 15, 1881. In 1902 it was renamed after William Fenton Coon, an early settler in this area. The town developed around two railway stations: one opened by the Minneapolis-St Paul Railway Company in 1887, and another opened by Northern Pacific Railroad subsidiary Canadian National Railway (CN) in 1912. The first station served as both headquarters for CN and as a stop for trains traveling between Duluth and Minneapolis-St Paul; later it also served as a hub for bus service operated by Twin Cities Bus Lines. These days, only one remnant of CN's history remains: the former depot building now used as an event space by local bandshells and other events. The second station stood until it too was destroyed by fire on May 20, 1951; however, its loss did not dampen Coon Rapids' spirit as it quickly rebuilt itself using materials from both stations. In 1854, a group of men led by Captain James Watt discovered coal deposits near what is now Coon Rapids. The town was named after the creek that flowed through it. Coal mining and other businesses soon became major industries in Coon Rapids. The town also grew rapidly due to its location, as people traveling through the area frequently brought goods and money with them. By 1916, Coon Rapids had a population of around 1,500 people. However, during World War I, the town saw an increase in traffic because of its connections to military bases in nearby Duluth and Superior. In 1941, when Minnesota joined Nazi Germany, Coon Rapids became part of Gestapo-controlled Territory No.-1 and experienced increased repression from Nazis. Despite this experience, many local residents remained supportive of their own government until it was finally toppled by Allied forces at the end of World War II. Since then, development has resumed inCoon Rapids; however, some aspects of its history have been overshadowed by more recent events such as political correctness or gentrification efforts that have taken place within its boundaries
