The first coffee beans were grown in Columbia Heights, Minnesota in the early 1880s. The first coffee shop in the area was opened in 1887 by Harry and Fannie Osterwald. In 1896, the first cafe on Nicollet Avenue opened and served coffee until 1961. The business was acquired by Northwest Coffee Corporation in 1961 and operated as a restaurant until 1994 when it closed its doors for good. In 2007, Northwest Coffee Corporation leased space at 214 First Street in Columbia Heights to open a small batch roastery and café which continues to serve coffee today. The cafe is open from 7am to 6pm Monday through Saturday, and 8am to 4pm on Sundays. Despite this, some residents continue to live here because of its historic value or access to cultural events.
