The first café in Columbia Heights was opened in 1892 by Nels van der Sloot and his wife, Emma. The business grew rapidly and soon became one of the leading coffeehouses in the city. In 1916, Nels passed away and his wife kept the business running until her death in 1938. After her death, the business was taken over by their daughter, Hilda van der Sloot. Under her ownership, the café thrived until it closed its doors for good in 1981. However, during its time on campus at Washington University-Staatsburg (WUST) it produced some of the most iconic images associated with WUST such as a photo of Hilda wearing a “badger suit” to a meeting inside what is now known as Starbucks Coffee House. Despite its closure, Columbia Heights Coffee House left an indelible mark on STAATSBURG culture that continues to be seen today within WUST. It is no wonder then that when Starbucks decided to open up shop on Kieffer Road just north of Columbia Heights at 2235 Kieffer Rd., they knew they needed to bring back this iconic cafe as part of their growth strategy for their new location. And so they did! They renovated everything from the inside out and made it into one of their most popular cafes across all campuses – not only because of its coffee quality but also for its unique atmosphere which features exposed brick and wood walls decorated with antique lace curtains and period pieces from Van der Sloot’s collection. TheVanDerSloot Café has long been beloved by students at Washington University-Staatsburg (WUST). Its unique setting within WUST’s historic buildings has made it an institution among students throughout Missouri Valley University System (MVCUs). And even after years without service or tourism changes have occurred on campus since then due to changes within MVCUs (e.g., WIU Cutters football game),Columbia Heights Coffee House still remains one of our favorite places to meet up outside class hours - whether we are hitting up happy hour or trying our hardest not break curfew!
