Cloquet is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Red River near its confluence with the Missouri River. The population was 1,690 at the 2010 census. Cloquet is part of the Cloquet-Moorhead Micropolitan Statistical Area. Cloquet first settled in 1853 as a farming community on an 8-acre (3 ha) tract granted to David Moore by General George Armstrong Custer during the Dakota War of 1862. In 1868, John Chalmers and his brother James bought 640 acres (250 ha) northeast of Cloquet from David Moore for $5 per acre ($14,000). They named their new land "Cloquet" after John Chalmers's father-in-law, who had been killed in a Cavalry engagement northwest of Cloquet in 1851 while serving in Indian Territory under United States Colonel Samuel Jones. In early 1870s, Claxton & Company began operating a flour mill at what is now called corner Main and Center Streets. By 1872, it had become one of several mills operated by local farmers to help turn out flour for local markets and shipped to Chicago via riverboats. One year later, Claxton erected this large frame building which still stands today adjacent to today's plaza downtown: The mill continued operation until 1902 when it was destroyed by fire; however, parts were salvaged and rebuilt various times over the years including being used as a bank building during Prohibition years before becoming derelict in the late 1970s and being sold for demolition in 1990; however it has been saved and currently undergoing restoration as an antique museum open daily from April through October

Cloquet is a small town in Hibbing, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hibbing-Cloquet-Emmons township. The Cloquet post office was established in 1857, and operated until 1907. In 1865, Cloquet had a schoolhouse and two churches. In 1873, a store opened in Cloquet with twenty men employed. A store and hotel were built on the present site of the courthouse in 1902. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1903 on the site of the old First Methodist Church. The first Lutheran church was also built here about 1912. In 1905, Claxton Township added Cloquet to its territory; it remained an agricultural township until 1959 when it became a city subject to Hibbing Municipal Rule by ordinance No 946. The mayor from 1951 through 1957 was Wm Fenton (D). Mayor Hagerty took over from Fenton on January 1, 1958; he served until his death on May 20 that year while still serving as Mayor of Cloquet/Hibbing City Limits Incorporation vowing never again to run for reelection without first being elected as Mayor of City Limits Incorporation vowing never again to run for reelection without first being elected as an individual citizen or qualified elector thereof

The community was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants around 1851, and its name comes from the Cloquet River. It grew rapidly during the early years ofMinnesota's incorporation as a state, becoming one of the most populous towns in the area. In 1871, Cloquet became part of newly created Minneapolis County, and declined to become part of either city until after Minneapolis' annexation into Minnesota.
