Coffee has been enjoyed by people in Cloquet, Minnesota for over 100 years. In 1892, The Cloquet Coffee House was opened and served coffee to the residents of the town. It was not until 1912 that a grocery store and café were opened in what is now the center of Cloquet. The first coffee shop in Cloquet served Dutch-made roasts of Java beans. The first commercially roasted coffee beans were sent from Italy in 1912 by Pietro Guglielmo de Sanctis who ran an Italian Trading Company out of Cloquet. By 1920, The Cloquet Coffee Shop had become one of the largest coffee shops in the United States with a wide variety of coffee drinks made available to customers including lattes, macchiatos, Americano's, decafs and churros. Many Cloquet businesses have continued to operate into modern times such as The Newsstand which continues to serve fresh newspapers all day every day since 1914 and also offers baked goods such as cookies and cupcakes daily from 9am-3pm; The Post Office which has been serving mail since 1917; and The Klondike Café which has been providing local cuisine (such as soup or salad) since 1974.

The Cloquet Coffee Company has been making coffee since 1896. The company was founded by George Cloquet, a Norwegian immigrant who started out selling grocery supplies in the town of Cloquet. In 1916, Cloquet and his brother-in-law, Harry J. Haglund, opened a small shop on Fourth Street in Cloquet that became the first cafe in the area. The brothers served coffee until 1978 when they sold the business to John Magnusson.Magnusson continued to operate the cafe until 2003 when he retired and handed over ownership to his son, John Magnusson II. In 2006, John Magnusson III purchased the business from his father and reopened it as a full-service coffee shop with a focus on scones and breakfast items.

Cloquet was platted in 1854 by Elisha Hecox and named for its founder, Dr. Cornelius Cloquet. The first post office was established in 1857, and the town became a village in 1893. It was incorporated as a city on April 13, 1907. The current mayor is Shawn Kempthorne. Cloquet is located at (45.610802,-95.036583). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,362 people, 923 households, and 672 families residing in the town. The population density was 484 people per square mile (190/km²). There were 1,052 housing units at an average density of 227 per square mile (87/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 3% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race made up 0% of the population

Cloquet was founded in 1871 by Minnesota natives John Cloquet and his wife Sarah. The Cloquet farmstead sat on the present-day site of Cloquet Township until it sold in 1914 to Louis B. O'Neill, who organized what is now St. Cloud County. In 1924, when the state of Minnesota split into two branches, Cloquet became part of the eastern branch, which later became Minneapolis-St. Paul.
