Coffee has been a part of the Chaska community for as long as anyone can remember. In fact, coffee was first brewed on the premises of the local mill in 1876. The mills closed in the early 1900's, but coffee continued to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. In 1907, one of Chaska's most famous citizens, Judge George Gray opened his own coffee shop in downtown. The shop became known for its excellent quality coffee and well-loved chocolates. In 1922, Judge Gray passed away; his business passed into other hands but the name of his favorite drink remains unchanged today - Starbucks Coffee! Not content with just being a small town coffee shop, Judge Gray also started a grocery store next door that served up delicious hand-picked coffees from all over Minnesota! Chaska is a small town in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, located in rural northwestern Minnesota. The population was 3,906 at the 2010 census. Chaska is one of the oldest towns in the Twin Cities and was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854. The first store in Chaska opened on October 7, 1854. The city of Chaska was platted in 1907 and named after banker and philanthropist A.C. Chaska, who had donated land to the city for its development. In 1912, Chaska became home to both a high school and a college; these institutions remain present today as Minneapolis Technical College (MTC) and Saint Anthony's Catholic University (SACU), respectively. During World War II, many residents of Chaska took up arms against Nazi Germany; some were killed or captured during the war while others fought in various local campaigns such as Operation Crossroads which target German military installations throughout Minnesota). Afterward, many residents returned to their farming roots and spent their time raising pigs, cows, chickens, horses and other livestock until reaching retirement age or moving away from their hometown entirely. Minnesota was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in 1836. The area now known as Chaska was part of the Dakota Territory until it was granted to Minnesota in 1889. In 1862, Chaska became the county seat of Ramsey County. In 1904, Chaska became a city and remains so today.
