Small batch coffee has been a popular drink in Chanhassen, Minnesota for over 40 years. The first small batch coffee shop was opened in the early 1960s by two friends, Dick and Don Scherer. Today, there are numerous small batch coffee shops throughout the city. The popularity of smallbatch coffee can be traced back to the early days of Coffee alley in Chanhassen. Founded in 1961 by Carroll Doherty and his wife Betty, Coffee alley served high-quality espresso drinks made with fresh beans from around the world. One of their most popular slogans was "coffeepalooza" because customers could buy any amount they wanted and share it with friends. In 1970, Dick Scherer opened an unsuccessful business called The Breakfast Club on Snelling Avenue. However, this did not stop him from continuing to run his own small batch coffee shop called Dick's Coffee House until he passed away in 2003. His son Brian took over the business after he lost his father's death in 2006. At present, Dick's Coffee House is still operational and serves up some of the bestsmallbatch coffee around!

The Chanhassen Coffee Company was founded in 1907 by Swedish immigrants, Gustav and Anna Lagerroth. The business became a roasting and brewing company. In 1935, the company changed its name to the Chanhassen Coffee Corporation. In 1958, the Chanhassen Coffee Corporation retired its last coffee mill and began marketing their coffee through local wholesalers. In 1984, the company moved its headquarters from downtown Chanhassen to a new manufacturing facility off of 4th Street in north Minneapolis. In 1998, the company merged with two other companies to form Twin Cities Coffee Incorporated.
