Chanhassen is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Chanhassen is located on the eastern edge of the Minneapolis-St.Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Maplewood to the north, Bloomington to the east, Hopkins to the south and west, and Brooklyn Park to the northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, Chanhassen has a total area of , all of it land. The first European settlers in what is now Chanhassen were Swedish immigrants who arrived around 1857. They named their community Egerstad after their home town in Sweden. The first post office in Chanhassen was established on November 15, 1871; it was renamed Hennepinville in 1892 because postal service had been established between St. Paul and Minneapolis then only through mail routes that connected downtowns rather than going out into rural areas like Chanhassen did. In 1923 there were 464 people living in Chanhassen when it became a part of Rice Lake Township; by 1960 there were 1,248 residents living there according to its 2000 census results which showed that during those years real estate prices had increased 102%. The steady growth continued until 1990 when housing prices began a slow decline which continues today with some communities experiencing faster-than-average growth rates such as Chanhassen but others enduring declines such as Rice Lake Township which lost over 60% of its population from 2000 to 2010 while still having more people than any other township within Ramsey County even though it lies inside Minneapolis’ city limits

It is home to Saint Olaf College and the Chanhassen Mall. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1876 as a small farming community on the east side of Rice Lake near present day Chanhassen Boulevard and Maple Street. The first post office was established in 1880 and the first store was opened in 1882. By 1890, there were nine businesses in town and it had a population of 125 people. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Chanhassen after Captain John Fenton Chanhassen who fought with General Pershing during World War I. In 1925, Stonington Mines began extracting coal from nearby Rice Lake which led to increased development around the lake including growth of industry along Chenault Road and Maple Street leading up to downtownChanhassen where most business now are located today including several thousand homes built since then within only a few miles of one another on arterial streets that have become two-lane highways almost alluvially deposited over time by glacial activity as well as fill from local land annexation/division into other towns/cities resulting in what has been called "the greatest undeveloped area on Earth" Chanhassen experienced significant economic decline following World War II when heavy industries closed or relocated away while much housing stock was built outside of town limits increasing suburban sprawl aroundtown while concurrently reducing tax revenue which contributed significantly to inadequate infrastructure deficits throughout much ruralMinnesota during this period also exacerbating social disparities caused by rapidly growing inner-city populations having little opportunity for access to quality education or necessary jobs generally paralleling trends across much urban America during this same era also contributing substantially to environmental degradation due both directly theretofore unmet needs for water resources needed for agriculture as well as indirect effects (e.g., air pollution) through increased use of synthetic fertilizers etcetera creating an inhospitable environment ideal for mosquitoes which results in significant health problems for many residents particularly among young children
Chanhassen is located in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The community started as a farming village on the Chanhassen River in 1881. In 1907, it was named after Chanhassen Township and Range 10th Judicial District Judge George E. Chanhassen. In 1922, the adjacent town of Hennepin became a separate municipality; however, much of what is now Chanhassen remained within Ramsey County until 1959 when it became part of Minneapolis. Chanhassen has been home to several steel mills over the years including Bethlehem Steel and National Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal). The last mill closed down in 2006 and most of its operations were transferred to nearby Mankato which also closed down that year.
