Gourmet Coffee History in Champlin, Minnesota There is no doubt that coffee has been a part of the Twin Cities for as long as people have been drinking coffee. One of the earliest documented references to coffee can be found in an article by John L. Stevens in 1892 entitled "A NewType of Coffee." In this article, Stevens mentioned that he had tasted a coffeestrosity from Brazil which was so different from anything he had ever tasted that he was able to describe it simply as "coffeepot-quality coffee." By 1906, cafes and grocery stores were starting to serve quality café-style coffee. At first, most cafés served only weakly flavored roastings such as Sumatra or Java. However, over time more and more adventurous clients began to order something more complex and flavorful than just regular roastings. As demand grew for better-quality coffees, cafés started opening up their own roasting plants. This new technology allowed cafés to produce much better beans than they could before because they were not dependent on other businesses providing them with cups of mediocre coffee. One of the first Cafes in Champlin was Cafe Zaragoza opened by Mrs. Jeanette Kappel in 1945 on Seventh Street West near Hennepin Avenue – one of the first Starbucks franchises! The Zaragoza Café was soon followed by Cafe Nascimento (1946), Café Veneziano (1948), and finally Café de la Gaceta (1969). These cafes are significant because they all featured beautiful wood-paneled walls with intricate details etched into each surface including coats of arms and portraits of famous cafe owners/owners’ families. Each one boasted its own unique atmosphere which contributed significantly to the popularity and renown of these establishments. After many years serving great coffee at various locations throughout our city, we sad goodbye to our favorite Cafes but thank them for giving us our caffeine fix every day!

Champlin was founded in 1855 by Carl L. Champlin and his wife, Emma. The Champlins were pioneers in the farming industry, starting a small farm near present-day Duluth. In 1856, they moved to what is now Champlin Township and started a large dairy farm. They also developed a lumber business, which produced many of the early buildings in the township. The Champlins also served as trustees for a number of local schools and ran the Village Green public house for many years. In 1916, they sold their farm and all their assets to James A. McNaught of Chicago for $3 million dollars. McNaught used the money to build what is today called McNaught Tower on Central Avenue in downtown Champlin.
