When the Champlin Coast Guard Station was first established in 1915, it was a small station with just a handful of volunteers. The station's existence changed dramatically after World War II when the United States entered into the war and began requisitioning Coast Guard vessels. In order to support the war effort, the Coast Guard purchased many large ships, including four coast guard cutters. The Cutters were used to transport supplies and troops along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. They also helped protect coastal communities from potential attacks by Japanese forces during World War II. After the war, the Cutters were returned to service and served until they were decommissioned in 1968. Since then, there have been several attempts by different organizations to purchase or restore one of these old vessels. None of these efforts have ever come to fruition, but that doesn't mean that coastline security hasn't been improved as a result of their use. For example, in 2001, a group of Champlin residents formed an organization called "Citizens for Preservation" which aimed to help preserve and operate one of the Cutters should it be donated or given away for free because its owner had died. Despite these setbacks, community members continue to work towards restoring or purchasing one of these vessels so that Champlin can once again enjoy its long history as a coast guard station!

Champlin is a small town in Minnesota, located about an hour southwest of Minneapolis. It was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Champlin is named after Captain John Champlin, who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Champlin was Ole Hanson (1824-1900), who built a cabin on the present day site of town on November 11, 1854. At that time, it consisted of only 20 people and lay within what is now Hennepin County. A second group of settlers arrived two weeks later and erected their own cabin near the current intersection of Deer Creek Road and Cedar Street. By 1862, there were 10 families living in Champlin with three buildings and 30 acres (12 hectares). In 1864, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of schools throughout Minnesota; this provided seed money for construction projects such as Chaminade School House and Black Hawk Lutheran Church—the first Protestant church established in Minnesota. In 1865, entrepreneur John Dickey began marketing hay to early settlers from his farm two miles east of town. The product becameknown as "Champlin hay" because it could be found only near Chaminade School House—a stop on one of Dickey's wagons touristed around rural Minnesota during those days. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Champlin with six businesses and 145 acres (65 hectares) Agricultural production increased rapidly due to good weather conditions; however harmful gales destroyed crops several times between 1871-75%. In 1876-77, bad weather caused extensive damage to corn cribs owned by local farmers which led to widespread protests against railroads Throughout much of America at that time; these protests did not materialize in Champlin however some felt they had received unfair treatment from investors A new water supply was built just northwest of town along Deer Creek Road beginning in 1886 following complaints made by early settlers about poor drainage near downtown Mankato Following incorporation as a village on December 15th 1906 having consolidated all prior villages within its boundaries including Chaminade School House (now known as Lighthouse Pointe Resort Hotel), various improvements were made including: roading northeast across Cedar Street from Main Street onto White Rock Lake then southward onto private land adjoining Elk River before rejoining main street continuing until reaching today's border with Hennepin County
