Burnsville is adjacent to Minneapolis-St. Paul on the north and east, Nicollet on the south, Eden Prairie on the west and Addison on the northwest. The first settler in what is now Burnsville was James Fenton in 1851. A post office called Fenton was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The community name comes from George Washington Burnett who donated land for a town lot near his farmstead. The lots were sold to various people throughout the years and burnettown became an official name for Burnesville when it was platted as a village within city limits of Minneapolis-Saint Paul in 1872. In 1907, one of Minneapolis' first streetcar lines ran through Burnesville with stops at Nicollet Mall (now known as State Fair Park), Hopkins Landing Roads (later Snelling Road), and River Heights Cemetery before terminating at Lyndale Avenue & Lyndale Street just north of downtown Minneapolis. At that time, there were only three houses in Burnesville - all built between 1906 and 1908 by Drury Brothers construction company owner John Durney - but due to their proximity to streetcar lines and easy access to shopping centers and other attractions throughout downtown Minneapolis, Burnerville quickly grew into one of Minnesotas major communities for transportation. Drury Brothers continued building homes into the 1920s; however by World War II most residents had moved away or left for greener pastures elsewhere when war production disrupted local industry nationally. Afterburner gas lamps began lighting up parts of town during Prohibition which helped draw attention to Burnesville once again while also providing some much-needed economic stability during those difficult times; however by 1951 most businesses had closed or been replaced by more modern versions such as convenience stores/ gasoline stations etc., making Burnesville once again an agricultural center primarily focused on raising cropsrather than tourism or nightlife opportunities enjoyed by other towns located nearby like Hopkins Landing Roads & River Heights Cemetery vicinity today). In 1957 Baptist Hospital opened its doors following a large donation from Mrs Johnnie Guthrie which allowed then Mayor Harry Seibert Jr.'s dream of creating what would eventually become MNsure health insurance program a reality; thus officially bringing many residents back into town after years spent living outside town due mainly to lack of affordable health care options available within commuting distance from majority populous cities like St Paul etc...
