Burnsville is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the west side of the Minnesota River. The population was 5,445 at the 2010 census. Burnsville is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Burnsville was Elijah Hunt in 1849. He and his wife, Lucy, started a small farm near present day University Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. Hunt's nephew, John Hennepin, came to Burnsville in 1855 and opened a store on Second Street which became known as "the Dragon's Den." John Atherton also settled here in 1861 when he bought land from Elijah Hunt and built an adobe cabin on today's southeast corner of Alice Avenue and Seventh Street. Atherton became one of the original incorporators of townships in Ramsey County; he donated land for Burnsville Township on November 3, 1865. In 1870, James Shields established a grocery store at Third and Broadway Boulevard which later became known as Shields Drug Store & Supermarket (now Target). Shields' son-in-law Harry Peck developed what is now Park Place south of Third Street into an upscale shopping district called "The Gables". In 1887 Harry Peck sold his interests in The Gables to George Eastman for $2 million dollars that created Rochester General Electric Company (RGE). GE built its first power plant here – the Eastman Compressor Plant – which operated until 1978. In 1912 RGE merged with American Radio Corporation (ARCO) to form NBCUniversal Incorporated (NBC). After years of experimentation with various forms of television broadcasting here began airing live networks such as CBS programming starting February 15th 1961 under new call letters KPNX/ABC affiliate WCCO/NBC station owner Minneapolis Television District operating outbuildings on Nicollet Mall across First Avenue from United Methodist Church where KPNX had been located since 1951)
