The Burnsville Coast Guard Station was built in 1935, and has been serving the community since. The Coast Guard Station is home to the Burnsville Life Saving Unit and provides emergency response services for residents of the town. On July 1, 2009, the Coast Guard Station in Burnsville reopened after being closed for over a year due to budget cuts. The first settler in Burnsville was John Burns on July 3, 1858. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had been president during the American Civil War and who died in 1865 while serving as military governor of Missouri. Burnsville was founded by men from Illinois and Wisconsin who were looking for land to settle after their state's admission into the Union in 1848. They arrived on a steamboat called the "Minnesota" on October 6, 1858, and set up camp near what is now North High School and Main Street. The men built a log school house which served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1870. From its beginnings, Burnsville grew slowly but steadily thanks to its agricultural potential and its location at an important crossroads connecting two major trade routes:the Minnesota River valley with Manitoba and Canada through Dakota Territory and then across Iowa to Chicago via Sioux City before rejoining the Mississippi Valley at Minneapolis-St. Paul;and Northwestern Minnesota with coal mining areas around Granite Falls (now West Plains) and Anoka (now Rochester). In 1872, when townships were organized within Ramsey County, Burnesville became one of them; it remained so until 1959 when it united with Aberdeen to form Ramsey County municipality #1(). In 1902 residents voted to change their name to Burnsville after General George Washington Burnes who had fought in the Mexican-American War under United States command as Captain of Company D of the 7th Infantry Regiment—the same regiment that later fought alongside Ulysses S Grant at Gettysburg.. burna

In 1879, the town seat was moved to a new location on the north side of the river, and Burnsville became an incorporated village. The first mayor was John Ladd. In 1907, the town charter was amended to allow for non-profit organizations to be formed in the community. In 1916, Burnsville became part of the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area and changed its name to Minneapolis-St Paul City Park
