In 1925, when the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport became operational, Burnsville became an important node within the global aviation community because it served as a main gateway into North America for commercial airlines carrying passengers and cargo. As a result, local businesses grew dramatically related to this new airport market opportunity. During World War II, Burnsville saw an influx of military personnel who were stationed here during the war effort. Burnsville, Minnesota is a small town located in the state of Minnesota. The population was 3,675 at the 2010 census. Burnsville is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Burnsville were four brothers who came to this territory from Illinois in 1824. They named their new settlement after William Burns, an American politician and general during the Mexican–American War and president of Texas in 1836. The Burnside brothers founded a flour mill and several other businesses before dying in 1853. Their son, George Washington Burnside, took over the business and carried on the family tradition until his death in 1906. In 1907, John A. Babcock purchased land near Burnsville and began to build a large dairy farm called Babcock Dairy Limited which would eventually become one of the largest dairy companies in America. In 1916, he married Agnes Whiteley and they moved to their farmstead where they raised six children (Agnes died young). After World War II, Babcock became involved with local politics as alderman for Ward 2 on City Council and later served as mayor from 1955 to 1959; he also served as chairperson for committees on city government affairs from 1961 to 1965 and 1980 to 1984. In 1970 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota by popular vote but lost when incumbent Jesse Ventura won election against him. In 1905, burning of timber in nearby Hawarden prompted the erection of a wooden stockade around the town to prevent destruction by fire. By 1915, Burnsville had achieved its present size and shape as an agricultural center with a railroads running through it. The post office in Burnsville was established in 1856.[2] It was renamed Burnside in 1907 after George Washington Burnside, brother of John A.Burns and one of the original settlers of Ramsey County[3]. coal mining became an important industry during the early 20th century; many mines were opened along Snelling Road near downtown Burnsville. However, these mines closed during World War II because of changes in fuel supplies and production methods that made coal less profitable than oil or natural gas. In some ways, Burnsville has been paralleled by its larger neighbor Hibbing since their founding towns were both founded near water resources used for irrigation agriculture until those resources declined during late 19th century when new land became available for settlement westward from Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area[4]. However, Hibbing is more developed physiographically as it sits atop higher ground with adequate topography to support more urban development; while Burnside has seen relatively little growth either due to lack of opportunity or infrastructure constraints unique to its location within Ramsey County rather than any major physical features which would make it easier to develop (such as proximal railroad access).[5][6][7]
