The Burnsville, Minnesota Army unit deployed to Iraq in 2003 has a long history of giving back to the community. In honor of the 10th anniversary of their deployment, we are examining how army gifts have influenced the lives of local residents over the years. In 2003, the Burnsville Army unit deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The team arrived in Baghdad on January 17 and quickly began providing support to coalition forces. One year later, on November 12, 2004, they Deployed once again to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This time around, they were joined by Task Force Spearhead which was made up of detachments from other units in central Minnesota. Since their deployment there have been countless opportunities for army members and local residents to interact together. From handing out food during military downtime or helping with cleaning projects during deployments, army members have often gone above and beyond simply rendering aid or service; they have helped create lasting relationships that continue today.

Burnsville is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, just east of Minneapolis. The population was 42,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County and home to Hennepin County University. Burnsville is known for itsApple orchards and heavy manufacturing industries such as paper mills and locomotive parts factories that have closed in recent decades. However, some new businesses are starting up in Burnsville as persons become more interested in foodie culture and what it has to offer outside of traditional farming regions like Minnesota. The first settler in Burnsville was Elisha Dickinson on November 1, 1836 when he arrived from Illinois with his family on an ox team with the rest of the town's founding families. Dickinson became part of Hennepin County when it was organized on January 29, 1837 (). At first there were only five settlers: Dickinson, John Goodrich, James Shawyer, Solomon Kilgore, and Troy Bemis (the last two are now buried atwood Cemetery). The town grew rapidly; by 1840 there were over 100 people living in what is now downtown Burnsville. In 1846 Edward Siphon set up a sawmill west of town which became one of the largest employers in town until it closed down around 1970 due to mill competition from nearby local companies within a few decades*. By 1850 there were over 200 residents living Downtown with shops and homes all around what is now First Avenue between Seventh Street and Twelfth Streets*. A year later they had their own newspaper called The Pioneer* (now Pioneer Press) which began publication October 10th*, 1865*. By 1870 they had built a school which served students along Park Avenue between Eighth Street and Ninth Street*. Although their schools did not stay open long- almost every one was replaced by post-secondary institutions within 20 years or less*: The first Pella College opened its doors on May 12th*, 1889 followed by still others including Cloudesley College (August 21st* 1896), Hamline University (March 9th* 1899), Stinson School (May 5th* 1902), Rochester Institute Of Technology(November 15th* 1904), Dakota Wesleyan University (December 3rd* 1907) among many others *. Although most industrial production stopped after World War II*, some new companies started up such as Alcoa Aluminum Company*, United States Steel Corporation*, International Harvester Company(* later Caterpillar Inc.), Home Depot *and Sears Roebuck & Co.* during this time period as well *. Some examples include: Briggs Manufacturing Company(* subsequent Jabil Corp.), Mohawk Brewing Company(* predecessor to current Anheuser-Busch InBev*) etcetera *. This can be seen as an overall trend where large companies moved out onto smaller towns throughout much rural America during this time period*. Many small towns would eventually lose these types of businesses due to competition from larger cities or other countries (* see “The Decline And Fall Of Rural American Industry” for more details). This decline can also be seen through looking at today's economy; many jobs that once supported large industrial productions are now outsourced to China or other countries** [*see "Migration And Regional Changes Affectingburnsville" for more detailed information]. Overall though Downtown Burnesville has managed to maintain some character despite this change; many restaurants remain open along First Avenue near Seventh Street while newer businesses have taken root along Park Avenue near NinthStreet*/'. Even so though Downtown may no longer be quite as bustling as it once was (*see below for reasons why*) you will still find plenty going on if you wander around!
