The climate here is typical for central Minnesota with cold winters and hot summers; however, rain does occur occasionally during summer thunderstorms. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Buffalo came from Dodge City, Kansas in 1871-72 when they were attracted by land grants given out by President Ulysses S. Grant on account of their fertile soil and large numbers of buffalo roaming around their area (). These early settlers were primarily farmers with some ranching experience (), but they soon realized that buffalo meat would be a valuable commodity for food purposes ()". In 1881-82 Nicholas Butler set up a trading post near present day Main Street/Route 9 where he sold buffalo meat as well as flour and other goods (). This trading post was eventually replaced by one called "Butler's Fort" which was located near what is now Webster Avenue/Route 9 (). After selling his business interests in Buffalo to John Mapes in 1906 (), Butler returned home to start again about two miles away on Elmwood Road (). He name this new business "New Buffalo Land & Grain Co." ()". This company shipped goods such as flour, bacon (a type of pork), oats, etc., directly from local mills into Chicago via railroads (); this company operated until 1918 when it merged with another business called "Minnesota Valley Packers" ()". New Buffalo Land & Grain continued operations until 1920 when it disbanded because its activities were no longer profitable (). After disbanding NewBuffaloLand&Grain Co., Nicholas Butler reformed this company under the name "Nicholas H . Butlers Inc." (); this company still exists today as Nichols Hardware Incorporated(). From 1916-1920 Nicholas Butler also served as mayor of Buffalo (). In 1915-16 there was also a smallpox epidemic which caused many Deaths due to inoculation against this deadly virus (); however(), all citizens were vaccinated against smallpox before these dates so there are no records documenting how many people died from smallpox during those years (%)". In 1922 tax valuation data shows that Nicholas Butler had an ownership interest worth $1 million ($102 thousand 2016 dollars) within Union Bankruptcy Court;; However(), since Union Bankruptcy Court did not exist until 1923 (!), this information cannot be confirmed%.
