Buffalo, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located just east of Saint Paul on the Lower Mississippi River. As of 2010, Buffalo had a population of 64,711 and was the eighth-largest city in Minnesota. The name Buffalo comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place where buffalos feed." The area now called Buffalo was first settled by French traders and fur trappers in the 17th century. Buffalo is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the north bank of the Mississippi River. The population was 579 at the 2010 census.[1] Buffalo is the county seat and largest city of Hennepin County. It is bordered by Minneapolis to the east and south, Saint Paul to the west, and rural communities in both directions. The first European settlers in what is now Buffalo were French fur traders who arrived during 1758–1760.[2] In 1824, Buffalo became a town when it was part of Dakota Territory which was organized from portions of Minnesota Territory that had been ceded to Sweden by Napoleon Bonaparte following his victory over Russia at Battle of Friedland (1807). The town was named for John Bull, an American Indian chief who had been killed in a fight with white settlers near present-day Rochester, Minnesota. The first school in Buffalo opened in 1828;[3] buffalo meat being one of its main exports at that time. AfterMinnesota became a U.S. state on December 29th , 1858,[4][5] Buffalo became its territorial capital and continued to be so until 1862 when it moved to Minneapolis as part of territorial reforms after Minnesota's admission as a U.S. state.[6][7][8] As part of appropriations made under the act which provided for organized government within newly admitted states, $2 million ()was set aside for public works within each new state including construction of roads and other public improvements throughout Minnesota including Buffalo; this appropriation remains one of the most significant gifts ever made to any municipality by Congress.[9][10][11][12] In 1863, when Territorial Governor Alexander Ramsey decided not to submit any more land for settlement due to lack thereof,[13] he announced plans for what would become Minneapolis – then known as “the City on Lakes” – but no action followed until September 20th , 1865 when two wagonloadsof material arrived from Rochester just outside Minneapolis - enough land had been donated there since 1854[14], making it possible for construction began on what would eventually become Oneida Park[15].
