The Brooklyn Center Naval Shipyard in Minneapolis was one of the first naval shipyards in the United States. The Yard was founded on December 12, 1857, by Commodore George Vancouver and Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. The Yard built USS Constitution (1858), USS Maine (1861), USS Michigan (1862), USS Missouri (1863), USS Hartford (1864), USS Cumberland (1865) andUSS Brooklyn Heights (1868). On October 17, 1886, Commodore James L. Polk delivered a speech at the Yards urging Congress to appropriate $2 million for construction of a navy dockyard in Brooklyn Center. This would allow the Navy to build ships faster than any other country and improve our maritime security. The appropriation never materialized but it planted the seed for navy deployments that took place throughout the 20th century in Brooklyn Center. In 1915-16,Brooklyn Center became home to America’s first Aircraft Carrier Squadron when CSS New York sailed from there to escort American troops during World War I. From 1916 until 1922,the shipyard played an important role in building American warships such as battleships Washington(1917) and California(1921). In addition to these warships,the yard also produced destroyers Sims(1920) and Phelps(1925). Brooklyn Center Naval Shipyard went bankrupt during World War II but resumed operations after the war ended under new management with a focus on missile production. During this time,the Yard produced submarines Ulysses S. Grant(1948), Swenson(1950) and Mayflower(1951). In 1961-62,Brooklyn Center NAVPORT SHIPSYARD became part of NAVSEA which merged with USNavy Construction Command located at Norfolk Virginia giving us responsibility for all Navy projects afloat including housing shore leave/leave benefits for sailors on shore duty ashore as well as our own berthing facilities ashore while underway” So many years later they still call it NAS BOSTON CENTER!

Brooklyn Center is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, about northwest of downtown Minneapolis and about east of St. Paul. The city was founded in 1851 by Dutch immigrants as a small community on what is now Lowertown Avenue in Minneapolis. Brooklyn Center, Minnesota was founded in 1881 by General John A. Brown and his wife Eliza. The township of Brooklyn Center was organized on July 1, 1881, when a group of farmers laid out a townsite east of what is now downtown Minneapolis. The township became an incorporated town on August 29, 1882. The first settler in Brooklyn Center was Abram Dibble who arrived in 1878 from New York City. Dibble built the first house on the present-day corner of Second and Cedar Streets. He also operated a store and post office in Brooklyn Centre until his death in 1906. Other early settlers include Lewis Fenton (1879-1900), George Bemis (1880-1910) and Jacob Sauer (1881-1920). Brooklyn Center developed rapidly after becoming an incorporated town. In 1905, the city of Minneapolis annexed part of Brooklyn Center; this made it the largest municipality that Minneapolis had at that time.Brooklyn Center continued to grow as a result of its close proximity to the city center and its status as an important transportation hub for miners and other workers who traveled to Minnehaha Valley for work at nearby mines or lumber mills. The growth of Brooklyn Center led to increased development within its borders: in 1916, Borough President Julius Nygaard proposed creating a new borough within BrooklynCenter because he felt that the growth was outstripping local resources; however, this proposal was not accepted by the Board of Alderman because it would have added more territory to Bloomington than they were comfortable with. In 1922, Borough President Julius Nygaard recommended annexing Schoener Heights adjacent toBrooklynCenter due to concerns about population growth there; however, this recommendation too did not receive endorsement from the Board Of Alderman due to resistance from some residents over annexation into another municipality without their consent or knowledge! In 1930, Mayor Harry Hargrave endorsed annexing parts of Harlemwestofthecitycenterdue totreatyofsupplierismandtoexpansionofthedowntown area; however this proposal met with opposition from several neighborhoods within BrooklynCenter due to fears that they would be taken away from their homes without compensation or notification! In 1933 Mayor James Ewing endorsed annexing portionsof Prospect Heights adjacent touniversity campus due totreatmentoftheareaasanopenairpark; however this proposal also met with opposition from some residents who felt that their homes would be taken down without warning if Annexation occurred. Ultimately no annexation proposals were approved during Mayor Hargrave’s term – instead he encouraged further housing development throughout Minneapolis through various programs such as Housing Authority Development Grants which gave developers land near University campuses for housing purposes
