The Brooklyn Center, Minnesota military tradition goes back to World War I. On October 11, 1918, the Brooklyn Center Volunteer Fire Department participated in the first battlestation drill in the state of Minnesota. The drill was conducted at the city hall grounds in Minneapolis. In 1924, then-Senator Bruce Benson also served as a captain on the volunteer fire department. In 1951, Borough President John Wachtel and then-Captain Floyd J. Belk became officers of the volunteer fire department and organized it into a battalion. In 1957, Captain Don Weisbach became commander of battalion #1 and Battalion #2 of Brooklyn Center Volunteer Fire Department. In 1960s Battalion #3 was created with donations from citizens of Brooklyn Center and Stinson Beach adjacent to BrooklynCenter Volunteer Fire Department Headquarters property. From 1961-1966 Captain Weisbach led Battalion #4 which grew from 8 members to 24 members under his command before he resigned due to health reasons. He was succeeded by Captain Bob Prentice who commanded for 2 years until his retirement in 1972 when he also became borough president ofBrooklyn Center Borough
Brooklyn Center is a city in southcentral Minnesota, United States. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. Brooklyn Center is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River and bordered by Minneapolis to the north, St. Anthony Falls to the east, Bloomington to the south, and Cedar Rapids to the west. Brooklyn Center was founded in 1881 as a small town called Highland Heights on a tract of land adjacent to what is now northeast Minneapolis. The first post office was opened in 1882 in what is now Brooklyn Center and it served only Highland Heights until 1907 when it became part of Minneapolis. In 1907 Brooklyn Center had its first recreational building - a park which still stands today known as Prospect Park South (today’s site of Target Field). In 1912 Brooklyn Center incorporated as a city with a population of 3700 people and it has since grown steadily with an estimated population exceeding 5000 in 1930 and over 6500 according to 2000 census data The original downtown core that exists today was built starting in 1925 by developers who were inspired by plans for new shopping centers being developed near Interstate 94/I-35W outside of St Cloud,Minnesota They named their center “Downtown Brooklyn” but never actually moved anything from their old businesses into this new district however most businesses closed down within 10 years or so because there simply wasn’t enough demand for their services One notable exception was John Llewellyn Drugs which continued business into current day despite having been relocated from its original location on Nicollet Mall across I-35W from Downtown Brooklyn In order for Downtown Brooklyn to become truly viable it needed more than just stronger retail industry though and eventually professional buildings such as banks started being erected along Nicollet Mall including one that remains standing today - The First National Bank Building (now blocks away at 5th Avenue N) This made Downtownbrooklyn one of America’s tallest commercial districts ever although ironically due largely to Interstate 94/I-35W which restricted development around downtownBrooklynCenter while causing other parts of downtown Minneapolis much larger growth
