Navy gifts have been a part of the Brainerd community for many years. The Naval Support Activity (NSA) in Brainerd was established in 1942 as a branch of the Navy Department. The NSA is responsible for providing support to the military and civilian communities within the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first gift given by the NSA was an engine watch from Commander Edward C. Smith, USNR, commanding officer, destroyer escort USS Waco (DE-655). The USS Waco gifted two radios to the NSA in 1953 and 1954 as part of its donation program for naval vessels visiting St. Paul. From 1955 through 1972, USS Holland (DDG-64) donated three radar sets to the NSA in addition to five torpedoes and two minesweepers. In 1976,USS Pillsbury (PFBN-9) donated four guns - one 5 inch Model 1921 gun and three 3 inch Model 1892 guns - along with four depth charges to be used by patrol boats stationed at Pier No., 8 on Lake Minnetonka. In 1983, USS Atchison (BB-63) donated an electronic warfare suite which included ten antennas including six directional antennas, a jamming device and software installation kit into two AN/TPSS-4C pulse radars located aboard her aft superstructure on deck 4B. This gift was later redesignated asHHH491DWC during fiscal year 1984 when CVEwent through modification with new electronics and provides operational capability beyond that available from any other type of shipboard EW system afloat today! Two more warships were gifted by the Navy in 1987; USS John F Kennedy(CVN 76), which gave an amphibious assault helicopter pilots training unit;and CSS Virginia (CVA 74), which provided ammunition for Navy ships operating off Korea coast. The last gift given by navy was in 1995 when HMCS Regina offered MH-60 Seahawk helicopters worth over $2 million CAD to support Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay Hawaii!

On 4 October 1944, she was torpedoed and sunk by Japan's submarine I-823 in the Seto Inland Sea sixteen miles east of Okinawa, Japan. Of the ship's crew of 362 men and women, only 24 survived to be taken prisoner by Japanese forces.

It is the largest city in Hennepin County by population and the second-largest city within Minneapolis metropolitan area after Minneapolis. Brainerd was founded on August 17, 1853, when two German farmers named Friedrich and Jacob Brainerd took up land east of present-day downtown Minneapolis. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Mississippi River and its accessibility to railroads. By 1870, Brainerd had become a full municipal district with a mayor and six council members. In 1876, the new county of Hennepin was created from parts of Dakota Territory and Brainerd became one of its first townships. The following year saw another growth spurt as entrepreneurs began investing in local businesses such as lumberyards, livery stable operations, restaurants/bars/nightclubs, and grocery stores. At the turn of the 21st century, Brainerd's economy was based largely on manufacturing: it is home to several JCB plants (JOBS company), Dole Foods', Mid American Dairylandnutrition cooperative milk producer operated by Amalgamated Milk Producers Inc., Johnson Controls', Twin Cities Airports Authority's regional terminal radar system contractor and many other companies that have their headquarters or major product presence in or around downtown Minneapolis or elsewhere within Greater Twin Cities area

Brainerd is a small town in the United States located in Dakota County. The population was 1,828 at the 2000 census. It was founded by Danish immigrants in 1854. The first school in Brainerd was built on the same site as present-day Brainerd High School, which opened in September 1865. In 1887, Brainerd incorporated as a village and its first mayor was J.W. Fargo. From 1965 to 1998, it was governed by a three-member board of trustees through an election process that included citizens who lived within a half-mile of the town limits. On July 1, 1998, township status was given to the town from village status within Dakota County because of its growing size and lack of economic opportunities outside of its borders; however, village functions remain unchanged within the township government. Brainerd is home to many interesting historical landmarks such as: The original store building still stands today on Main Street near where it used to be housed the post office until 1960 when USPS moved into their new building on First Avenue across from city hall (now known as "The Square"). The building is now occupied by Park Place Apartments and has been abandoned for years but is occasionally visited by tourists who want to look inside (it's not open to the public). Another interesting landmark is found near mile marker 183 on Highway 8 between Red Wing and Sioux Falls - this large concrete block structure served as both a jail and mental hospital during World War II due to concerns over Japanese American internment (the only other major concentration camp in Minnesota). Today it serves as part of local history museum named "Museum Row". One much less common history topic can be found at Brainerd Elementary School where most recent restoration efforts have been focused on renovating some exterior walls which are structurally sound but date back more than 100 years!

In 1881, the Brainerds sold their interest in the town to John S. Hanson. In 1892, Hanson built the first flour mill in Brainerd. The milling industry boomed in the early 20th century due to the invention of Krupp steel mills and other industrial advances. However, during World War I, Brainerd lost its status as an important steel center due to a lack of military production opportunities. The economy changed dramatically after World War II when new industries such as automobiles and electronics became popular in Minnesota. The population increased rapidly during this time and Brainerd experienced rapid development until it reached its current level of prosperity in the late 21st century.
